João Cancelo’s scoring surge gives Barcelona a new attacking option
João Cancelo is making an increasingly strong case for being more than an attacking full-back. The Barcelona defender has begun the 2026–27 season in impressive form, combining his usual work on the flank with a growing influence in front of goal. His latest strike, in Barcelona’s 4–1 Champions League victory over Galatasaray, has even prompted discussion about whether his versatility could offer the club an alternative in the false nine role.
That possibility would be an emergency solution rather than a straightforward positional change. Cancelo’s natural strengths remain his movement from defence, his ability to carry the ball forward and his eye for a pass. But his recent scoring record highlights how effectively he can arrive in dangerous areas—and why Barcelona may be able to use him in more than one way as the season develops.
Goals and assists across club and country
Across his last eight appearances for Barcelona and Portugal, Cancelo has recorded three goals and an assist, according to figures reported by Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo. Four of those matches came with Barcelona and four with the national team. The numbers are particularly notable because Cancelo is still expected to fulfil his defensive responsibilities while contributing to the attack.
Against Galatasaray, he showed both sides of that role. Barcelona won 4–1, with Cancelo finding the net during a performance in which the visitors created enough chances to make the margin even larger. Wasteful finishing kept the scoreline from becoming more emphatic, but the result gave Barcelona a valuable European win and added another highlight to the Portuguese international’s fast start.
Cancelo’s goals have not all come from the same type of situation. His ability to move inside, shoot from distance and exploit spaces left by opposing defences makes him difficult to track. When he advances from full-back, opponents must decide whether to follow him into midfield or maintain their defensive shape. Either choice can open room for Barcelona’s forwards and other attacking players.
A growing knack for opening the scoring
Twice this season, Cancelo has scored Barcelona’s opening goal. The first came in the club’s 7–2 La Liga win over Racing on 16 September. His effort from outside the box took a deflection off an opposing player on its way in, but the goal still reflected his willingness to take the opportunity when space appeared.
He started against Sevilla on 19 September without scoring, then carried his attacking form into international duty. Cancelo found the net in Portugal’s 4–2 Nations League win over Denmark on 1 October and scored again in the 2–1 victory over Norway three days later. After making a substitute appearance against Getafe on 10 October, he returned to Barcelona’s starting line-up and scored against Galatasaray on 13 October.
That sequence—three goals in his last three matches in which he scored—suggests that Cancelo is striking the ball with confidence and choosing his moments well. It also underlines the value of a defender who can provide a goal threat without requiring Barcelona to change their entire attacking structure.
Could Cancelo cover the false nine role?
Talk of Cancelo as a possible replacement for Brazil international Raphinha in the false nine role reflects Barcelona’s need for tactical flexibility. A false nine typically drops away from the centre-forward position to connect play, draw defenders out of shape and create space for teammates to run beyond. Cancelo has qualities that could help in certain phases: he is comfortable receiving the ball, can move into central areas and has the athleticism to support quick transitions.
However, playing there regularly would demand different skills from those required at full-back. The role involves close control under pressure, combination play in crowded central spaces and a consistent understanding with the wide attackers. Cancelo’s recent scoring form makes the idea intriguing, but it does not automatically mean he is a direct substitute for Raphinha. Barcelona’s coaching staff may instead view his versatility as a way to adjust the team during a match or respond to injuries and suspensions.
His more familiar position also gives the club a useful source of unpredictability. From the left flank, Cancelo can overlap outside a winger, move into midfield or cut towards the penalty area. That range of movement forces opponents to adapt and can create mismatches, especially when Barcelona are able to circulate possession quickly. His attacking instincts are most valuable when balanced with careful positioning, since advancing too often can leave space behind him for counterattacks.
What the form means for Barcelona’s season
For Barcelona, Cancelo’s early-season contribution offers an encouraging sign at a demanding point in the campaign. The club must manage domestic fixtures alongside Champions League football, and players capable of influencing matches in several ways can be especially important. A defender who can create chances, score from range and still contribute to the build-up gives the manager more options when selecting a starting XI or changing the shape during a game.
His form also adds a new dimension to Barcelona’s attacking threat. Opponents preparing to contain the club’s forwards now have another player to account for when Cancelo pushes forward. If defenders focus too heavily on the central attackers, the Portuguese full-back may find room to shoot or deliver a pass. If they step out to stop him, gaps can appear elsewhere.
There is no guarantee that Cancelo will maintain this scoring pace, and his primary responsibilities remain on the defensive line. Still, the early evidence is compelling: he is contributing goals for both Barcelona and Portugal while performing the demanding work expected of a modern full-back. In football prediction terms, that versatility could make him an increasingly influential figure as the season progresses, particularly in matches where Barcelona need an unexpected route to goal.
For now, the Galatasaray performance stands as another example of Cancelo operating near the peak of his physical and tactical abilities. Whether he is used as a full-back, an inverted defender or an occasional attacking option, his current form gives Barcelona a valuable weapon—and gives supporters plenty of reason to watch his next move closely.
