Bayern Munich News: Hoeneß Backs Eberl, Praises Kompany and Keeps Neuer’s Future Open
Uli Hoeneß has offered a revealing update on several major Bayern Munich talking points, defending sporting director Max Eberl while criticising Karl-Heinz Rummenigge for making his position on Eberl’s contract public. The club’s honorary president also voiced strong support for head coach Vincent Kompany, left the door open to Manuel Neuer playing beyond this season and addressed the disciplinary fallout facing Bayern’s reserve team.
The comments, made in an interview with Welt am Sonntag, come during a busy spell for the German champions, with domestic and European fixtures approaching and fresh questions surrounding the club’s leadership, squad availability and coaching staff. For supporters following Bayern Munich news, the remarks provide a useful insight into how the club’s senior figures view its current direction.
Hoeneß criticises Rummenigge over Eberl contract vote
Hoeneß said he was disappointed that Rummenigge had publicly revealed he abstained from the supervisory board vote on extending Eberl’s contract. The former Bayern chief executive later explained that he had considered voting against the extension before deciding to abstain during the meeting.
“I think it’s a shame that he said that publicly. It wasn’t necessary,” Hoeneß said, while acknowledging that the pair did not see the matter in the same way. He was quick to stress, however, that their personal relationship remained strong, describing it as “completely intact” and even better than before.
The disagreement is notable because Hoeneß himself had expressed reservations about Eberl earlier in the year. Around the DFB Cup final in May, he put the sporting director’s chances of receiving a new deal at “60 to 40 in favour”. At the time, questions had been raised about communication within the club and the cost of some player contracts.
Hoeneß has now explained that his concerns were based partly on feeling insufficiently informed and on what he considered excessive contract commitments. A conversation involving Eberl, Rummenigge and club president Herbert Hainer reportedly helped resolve those issues. Hoeneß said Eberl had since done good work and developed in the right direction.
Eberl responded calmly when Hoeneß first voiced doubts, saying that differing opinions were legitimate and that the important thing was to discuss them and assess how matters progressed. His new contract runs until 2029, giving Bayern time to build around the sporting director’s plans.
Hoeneß would extend Kompany’s deal again
Hoeneß was much less cautious when discussing Kompany, saying he could not imagine a better coach for Bayern at present. Although the Belgian’s existing agreement already runs until 2029, Hoeneß said he would personally support another extension if Kompany wanted one.
Since taking charge in 2024, Kompany has helped restore momentum at the club. Bayern won the Bundesliga title under his leadership and ended a six-year wait for the DFB Cup. The team also reached the Champions League semi-finals last season, where it was narrowly beaten by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.
That progress has strengthened confidence in the former Manchester City captain, who was previously linked with a potential return to the Premier League club. Hoeneß’s public endorsement is a strong signal that Bayern’s leadership views Kompany as central to its long-term sporting project.
There is, however, an immediate concern. Kompany, who had recently been dealing with a viral infection, collapsed while watching Bayern’s second team train on Friday and was taken to a Munich hospital. The club said he would undergo thorough examinations and remain under medical care. Until he is cleared to return, his coaching staff will oversee training and matches. Bayern have not provided further details about his condition.
Kimmich absence adds to Freiburg selection questions
Bayern may also be without Joshua Kimmich for their Bundesliga meeting with SC Freiburg. According to Sky, the midfielder is still unavailable following a bereavement in his family. He had already missed the Champions League match against Arsenal for the same reason.
Kimmich’s potential absence would be significant in a demanding run of fixtures. His ability to organise play from midfield and contribute defensively makes him one of Bayern’s most influential players, so the coaching staff may need to adjust the balance of the team if he cannot return.
Neuer’s future remains undecided
Hoeneß also declined to rule out Manuel Neuer continuing his career after his contract expires next summer. The Bayern goalkeeper is widely expected to retire at the end of the season, aged 41, but Hoeneß said the club should wait before making assumptions about either Neuer’s fitness or his intentions.
He pointed to Neuer’s enormous contribution since joining Bayern in 2011, noting the trophies and major moments they have shared. Reports suggest the club could speak with Neuer and third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich during the November international break or around the turn of the year, as both players’ contracts expire in 2027.
Bayern are preparing for the future regardless of Neuer’s decision. Hoeneß said young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig would be given an opportunity, adding that the club was ready to support him as a potential successor. Regular playing time is an important part of that development, particularly at a club where expectations are high and mistakes are closely scrutinised.
Bayern II face possible points deduction after derby incident
Bayern’s reserve side could be punished after pyrotechnics were set off by supporters during the city derby against 1860 Munich. The match was stopped for around four minutes after Bayern fans ignited flares following a goal that briefly brought 1860 back into the contest.
Bild reports that the Bavarian Football Association is considering a one-point deduction for Bayern II, alongside a fine of €15,000. Such a sanction would be unwelcome for coach Dante’s team, who are trying to recover from a difficult start in the Regionalliga Bayern and move into contention for promotion to the 3. Liga.
Bayern II are reportedly 12th, 14 points behind leaders FC Memmingen, although they have played three fewer matches. A strong run could still improve their position, but losing a point would make an already challenging campaign more difficult. Their scheduled match against DJK Vilzing was also called off after Kompany’s collapse, with reports describing those present as shocked by the incident.
Bayern Munich fixtures and prediction outlook
Bayern’s upcoming schedule includes a Bundesliga trip to Freiburg, a DFB Cup meeting with 1. FC Magdeburg and a high-profile clash with Borussia Dortmund before their Champions League visit to Atlético Madrid. The sequence will test the squad’s depth, particularly if Kimmich remains unavailable or Kompany needs time away from the touchline.
On paper, Bayern will be expected to compete strongly across all three competitions. But any football prediction should account for the uncertainty around player availability and the coach’s health, as well as the demands of a congested calendar. The club’s recent results suggest it has the quality to remain a contender; how smoothly it navigates the coming weeks may depend on its ability to manage those off-field and fitness concerns.
