Chelsea Transfer Prediction: Blues Renew Interest in Barcelona Defender Jules Koundé
Chelsea could make another move for Jules Koundé as the Barcelona defender faces growing competition for a regular starting place. The France international remains highly regarded in London, but a reported dip in form and a reduction in playing time have prompted fresh speculation about his future at Camp Nou.
According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Koundé is among the Barcelona players whose influence has waned under head coach Hansi Flick. Alejandro Balde has also reportedly struggled to maintain his previous standing. For Koundé, the challenge is especially notable: after establishing himself as an important part of Barcelona’s defence, he now has to fight harder to secure consistent minutes.
Competition is reshaping Barcelona’s defence
Flick’s willingness to promote and develop players has helped change the defensive pecking order. Gerard Martín and Eric García have taken advantage of their opportunities, strengthening their claims for prominent roles. Their progress has left Koundé with less room to operate than he enjoyed last season.
García’s revival has been particularly striking. After a loan spell at Girona and a period in which he was not central to Barcelona’s plans, he has returned with renewed confidence. He has also re-established himself in the Spain squad, giving Flick a versatile option who can cover centre-back, right-back and defensive midfield.
That flexibility matters in a demanding season, when injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion can force managers to rotate. García’s ability to fill several positions gives Barcelona tactical options—and makes it harder for Koundé to assume that his usual role will be waiting for him. Still, competition does not necessarily mean the Frenchman is surplus to requirements. His experience and defensive quality could remain valuable as the campaign progresses.
Chelsea have unfinished business with Koundé
Chelsea’s interest is not new. The Premier League club came close to signing Koundé in the summer of 2022, only for Barcelona president Joan Laporta to secure the defender’s move to Spain. Chelsea have continued to monitor him since then, and reports suggest the club has kept communication open with his representatives.
Journalist Matteo Moretto, speaking on the programme La Bizarra, said several Premier League sides are tracking the player’s situation. He added that Chelsea had already made enquiries last summer and could be prepared to pursue him again. Moretto suggested the Blues might test Barcelona’s resolve during the winter transfer window, with the asking price likely to shape any approach.
For Chelsea, Koundé could offer an experienced, adaptable addition to a defence that has been built around a mix of established internationals and younger players. His ability to operate at centre-back or right-back would provide cover across multiple positions. That versatility could be particularly attractive in the Premier League, where a busy schedule often places heavy demands on defensive depth.
However, a transfer would not be straightforward. Barcelona are reported to value Koundé at no less than €50 million, a substantial fee for a mid-season deal. Chelsea would also need to weigh the cost against other priorities, including the club’s wider plans for strengthening its squad. A winter move may depend not only on Koundé’s availability, but on whether the Blues believe he is the right fit at the right price.
Bayern Munich add to the transfer competition
Chelsea are not the only major club said to be interested. German newspaper Bild reports that Bayern Munich are also monitoring Koundé. Competition from the Bundesliga side could complicate Chelsea’s pursuit, particularly if Barcelona become open to negotiations and multiple clubs are willing to meet their valuation.
Barcelona’s own transfer plans will be central to the situation. The club may be reluctant to weaken its defence unless it can use the proceeds to address another important need. Reports indicate that potential priorities could include recruiting a high-level striker or adding further options at full-back. In other words, Koundé’s future may depend as much on Barcelona’s incoming business as on his place in Flick’s current team.
Will Koundé consider leaving Barcelona?
Despite the transfer speculation, there is no clear indication that Koundé is pushing to leave. He is understood to be strongly attached to Barcelona and the city, and previous comments have pointed to a player focused on regaining his best form rather than seeking an exit.
That distinction is important. A reduced role can create an opening for interested clubs, but it does not automatically lead to a transfer. Koundé may see the current competition as a challenge to overcome, especially if he believes he can convince Flick that he remains the best option for key matches. Barcelona, meanwhile, could prefer to keep a proven defender rather than sell during the season and risk leaving itself short.
Transfer prediction: Chelsea’s interest appears credible, and the club could explore the possibility of a deal if Koundé’s minutes continue to fall. Yet a January transfer remains uncertain. Barcelona’s reported €50 million valuation, Bayern Munich’s interest and Koundé’s own desire to stay all make an immediate move difficult to predict. The most likely next step is continued monitoring, with Chelsea assessing whether Barcelona’s sporting and financial priorities create a genuine opportunity.
For now, Koundé’s future may be decided on the pitch as much as in the transfer market. If he regains his place and delivers consistent performances, Barcelona will have little reason to sell—and Chelsea may have to wait. If the Frenchman remains on the fringes, however, the prospect of a renewed Premier League bid could become increasingly realistic.
