Mauro Icardi Open to Inter Milan Return as Free-Agent Transfer Decision Looms
Mauro Icardi has left the door open to a possible return to Inter Milan, the club where he spent some of the most defining years of his career. Now without a club after his Galatasaray contract ended, the Argentina striker says a reunion with the Nerazzurri would be meaningful—but only if both sides share the same ambitions.
Speaking to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the 33-year-old was asked whether he dreams of wearing Inter’s shirt again. His answer was warm but measured. Icardi recalled his time in Milan, including his years as captain, and said he still feels a strong connection to the club. His comments have naturally prompted fresh transfer speculation, although they do not amount to a confirmed offer or agreement.
“It would be something special,” Icardi said of a potential comeback. He described his Inter years as important and said he identified closely with the shirt. However, he made clear that sentiment alone would not be enough to bring him back. Any move, he suggested, would need to be built on mutual trust and a clear sporting purpose.
Icardi says an Inter comeback must have a shared purpose
Icardi’s departure from Inter in 2019 was difficult, and he has not hidden that the experience left a mark. He said he would like to “close the circle in a different way,” a phrase that has added emotional weight to the possibility of a return. Yet the striker also stressed that he would not come back simply to revisit the past.
“A return only makes sense if we both believe in each other and pursue a common goal,” he explained. Icardi added that he still has plenty to offer and would want to return as a useful member of the squad, with the aim of winning. That qualification matters: a transfer would depend not only on Inter’s interest, but also on whether the club sees a role for him within its current plans.
For supporters, the idea of Icardi returning carries both sporting and personal significance. He was once one of Inter’s leading attacking figures, but the relationship ended amid tension. A second spell would therefore involve more than evaluating his goal-scoring record. It would also require both parties to decide whether old disagreements can be put aside and whether their expectations now align.
Why Icardi’s first Inter spell ended
Icardi joined Inter in 2013 and became a central figure in the team, eventually taking over the captaincy. His time at the club included major individual milestones, but the final period was overshadowed by conflict. Early in the second half of the 2018–19 season, Inter removed him as captain and gave the armband to goalkeeper Samir Handanović.
The decision came during a strained period in which questions were raised about Icardi’s commitment and his relationship with the club and dressing room. Transfer rumours also circulated, with Real Madrid among the teams linked with the striker. The uncertainty contributed to a turbulent campaign, and Icardi was suspended for nine matches before returning to the team in April 2019.
When Antonio Conte became Inter manager that summer, Icardi was not included in his plans. The striker left on loan for Paris Saint-Germain, where he returned to regular football. PSG made the transfer permanent the following year, reportedly paying €50 million to secure his services.
From Paris to Galatasaray—and a period of reflection
Icardi moved to Galatasaray in 2022, initially on loan before continuing his career in Istanbul. He became a prominent part of the Turkish club’s attack, but his contract has now ended, leaving him available to consider his next step. With no transfer fee required for a signing, his situation may interest clubs looking for an experienced forward, although salary, fitness, role and contract length would all shape any negotiations.
The striker has said he received offers after leaving Galatasaray but chose not to rush into a decision. Rather than accept a project he was not fully convinced by, he preferred to take time to weigh his options. That approach suggests his next move will depend on more than the name or reputation of a club: he wants a sporting plan in which he believes he can contribute.
A return to Serie A could offer familiarity as well as a fresh challenge. Icardi knows the league, has previously played for Inter and would not need to adapt to Italian football from scratch. At the same time, a potential transfer would raise practical questions about how he fits into the squad, how much playing time he could expect and whether the club’s recruitment priorities include a striker of his profile.
Inter transfer prediction: interest remains unconfirmed
For now, Icardi’s comments should be understood as an expression of openness rather than evidence that a deal is close. He has not announced a decision, and no agreement with Inter has been confirmed. The clearest signal is that he would consider the possibility if the club also believed in the partnership and wanted to pursue a shared objective.
That makes the transfer prediction uncertain. A reunion could appeal to both sides if Inter needs an experienced goal-scorer and Icardi is offered a defined role. But a sentimental connection cannot settle questions of squad balance, tactical fit or financial terms. Any serious talks would need to address those issues directly.
Icardi’s words nevertheless give the story a compelling personal dimension. His Inter chapter ended painfully, but he appears willing to imagine a different ending. Whether that possibility develops into a genuine transfer opportunity will depend on the club’s plans and the striker’s final choice. Until then, the former captain remains a free agent—and a possible return to San Siro remains a question rather than a done deal.
