Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona Future in Doubt as Playing Time Disappears
Alejandro Balde’s place at Barcelona is becoming increasingly uncertain. The left-back remained an unused substitute in the club’s recent match against Getafe, a decision that underlined his steep decline in the pecking order under head coach Hansi Flick. With younger and more experienced alternatives now ahead of him, the coming transfer window could prove decisive for the defender’s future.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, the Getafe fixture offered Balde an important opportunity to make a case for himself. Flick selected a number of players who had not joined their national teams during the international break, giving several squad members a chance to feature. Joan Garcia and Eric, who had returned from Wembley without playing, both started, as did Gerard Martin, Gavi and Gabriel Jesus.
Academy graduate Xavi Espart was also included in the starting line-up despite having been away with Spain’s under-21 team. Balde, however, did not leave the bench. For a player once viewed as a central part of Barcelona’s long-term plans, the omission was another clear indication that he is struggling to regain the coach’s confidence.
From first choice to the fringes
Balde’s current situation did not emerge overnight. During the summer, Flick reportedly made it clear that the defender’s status within the squad had changed and that regular minutes could no longer be guaranteed. The coach even left him out of the squad for the match against Elche, giving the player time to consider his circumstances and decide how he wanted to proceed.
Balde ultimately chose to stay at Barcelona, perhaps believing that patience would bring a change in fortunes. So far, that gamble has not paid off. His only recent appearance came against Racing, when he was given 12 minutes in a match that was already decided. A brief late cameo offered little opportunity to influence the result or alter the coaching staff’s assessment of him.
Competition at left-back has also become more difficult. Balde is now reported to be behind both Espart and Joao Cancelo in Flick’s thinking. Espart’s emergence gives Barcelona a promising homegrown option, while Cancelo offers experience and flexibility across the defensive line. Together, they leave Balde facing a significant challenge if he hopes to reclaim a regular role.
Why the Getafe match mattered
Football selection decisions can change quickly, but the context surrounding the Getafe game made Balde’s absence particularly notable. With several players available after the international break, the fixture presented a chance for those outside the first-choice group to earn minutes. Balde’s failure to feature suggests that he is not currently among Flick’s preferred options, even when the opportunity to rotate is available.
That does not necessarily mean his Barcelona career is already over. Injuries, form and tactical adjustments can all reshape a squad hierarchy during a long season. Still, a player who is not being used in rotation may find it difficult to build momentum, especially when younger alternatives are receiving chances. For Balde, the immediate priority is likely to demonstrate in training that he can meet Flick’s demands and offer something distinct from his rivals.
His situation is made more complicated by the reported difficulties in resolving matters with his agent, Jorge Mendes, during the previous summer. With no agreement reached on a clear path forward, Balde remained at the club without a guaranteed role. The approaching winter transfer window could reopen discussions, whether about a temporary move, a permanent departure or a renewed effort to establish himself in Barcelona’s plans.
A sharp contrast with his best seasons
The uncertainty is striking given Balde’s earlier impact. He reached impressive levels during the 2022–23 campaign under Xavi, creating seven goals and establishing himself as an energetic attacking full-back. His pace, ability to carry the ball and willingness to push high gave Barcelona an important outlet down the left flank.
Balde also produced a strong return in 2024–25 under Flick, recording 10 assists. That contribution showed that he could remain effective in a more demanding tactical environment. However, he registered seven fewer assists last season than in the previous campaign, a decline that may have contributed to the changing assessment of his performances. Assists alone do not tell the full story of a defender’s season, but attacking output is an important part of Balde’s game.
Barcelona’s expectations for its full-backs are demanding. They must provide width and forward support while remaining alert to defensive transitions, particularly when the team commits numbers into attack. If Flick believes other players offer a better balance or greater reliability, Balde will need to respond with consistent performances whenever he is given an opportunity.
Transfer prediction: a winter decision could be coming
For now, Balde’s future remains unresolved, but the signs point towards a major decision in the months ahead. If his playing time does not improve before the winter window, a move may become more attractive to both the player and the club. Regular football could help him rebuild confidence and form, while Barcelona would have to weigh the value of keeping a talented academy product against the realities of its current squad hierarchy.
Any prediction about his next step should remain cautious. A strong run of training performances or an injury elsewhere could quickly reopen the door at Barcelona. Yet if Flick remains in charge and continues to favour Espart and Cancelo, Balde’s route back to regular minutes may become even narrower.
For Barcelona supporters, the central question is whether this is a temporary dip or the beginning of a separation. Balde has already shown that he can contribute at a high level, but potential alone will not secure his place. Unless his role changes, the winter transfer window could become the moment when the defender and Barcelona decide whether their best futures still lie together.
