Wycombe Wanderers vs Wimbledon: Preview
Wycombe Wanderers form analysis
Wanderers’ recent run of games has showcased attacking endeavors and resilient comebacks but also recurring issues seeing out results. They started with a six goal thriller in a 2-4 home loss to Bolton in the EFL Trophy, twice equalizing through Leahy and Wheeler but made to pay for sloppy defending throughout. There was a spirited fightback next match as they drew 2-2 away at Oxford, with two Leahy penalties overturning a deficit before conceding late.
However, problems seeing out a lead surfaced in their next match despite dominating against Cambridge in a goalless home draw. Back came defensive issues in their next game, progressing in the FA Cup 2-1 at Bradford but making it difficult after going two up early before conceding again due to slack set piece marking. Most recently, familiar problems arose in a 0-1 home loss to Stevenage, caught out by a late goal after controlling most of the game. Overall, Wycombe must learn to better control matches when ahead rather than having to continually come from behind.
Wimbledon form analysis
AFC Wimbledon’s recent run of games has showcased attacking endeavors and powers of recovery but also recurring defensive issues. They started with a disappointing 2-4 home loss to Accrington in the EFL Trophy, going three behind early before pulling two goals back after the break through Bugiel’s double. However, problems at the back remained in their next match, well beaten 1-4 away at Morecambe and unable to cope with the hosts’ slick play.
Wimbledon put in an improved defensive display in their next match, hammering Cheltenham 5-1 at home in the FA Cup thanks to goals from Al Hamadi, two from Tilley and strikes from Davison and Lemonheigh-Evans. This solidity continued next game as they beat Crystal Palace U21s 2-0 at home in the EFL Trophy courtesy of a Davison double. Most recently they made it back-to-back wins, beating Doncaster 2-0 away thanks to another Al Hamadi brace to get their league campaign up and running. Overall, if Wimbledon can build on their last two solid displays, they have the attacking tools to start climbing the table after a difficult start.
