Wolfsburg form analysis
The Wolves began their season with a comfortable 2- win over Heidenheim. John Brooks’ side took an early lead through Jonas Wind. They added a second just after the 20 minute mark to give Wolfsburg a commanding lead. Their defense held firm the rest of the match to see out the victory.
In their second game, Wolfsburg traveled to Cologne looking to make it two wins. However they sterner opposition and found themselves behind when Luca Waldschmidt scored for Cologne in the 55th minute. But Wind came to the rescue again, equalizing just seven minutes later. He then grabbed the winner with 18 minutes remaining to complete his brace and send Wolfsburg top of the table with two wins
Wolfs’s strong start came to an end in their third match against Hoffenheim. They fell behind early to a Tiago Tomas goal before John Brooks pulled them level just before half time. However, second half goals Maximilian Beier and Ridle Baku saw Hoffenheim come from behind to win 3-1. The defeat was Wolfsburg’s first of the season and highlighted some defensive vulnerabilities that Hoffenheim were able to exploit. Wind continued his good form with a goal, but it wasn’t to take anything from the game.
Union Berlin form analysis
Union Berlin also made a strong start, winning at home to Mainz. Sheraldo Behrens scored four goals, including two in the first nine minutes to hand Union Berlin the victory. Their form continued at Darmstadt, winning 1-4 with Behrens and Gosens both scoring.
However, in their third match they suffered their first defeat, losing 0-3 at home to RB Leipzig. Leipzig took control in the second half through goals from substitutes Simons and a brace from Šeško condemned Union Berlin to defeat. Leipzig’s 0-3 away win over Union Berlin was their first of the season under new coach Tedesco. After a slow start, second half goals from Simons and Šeško sealed the three points.
