Wolfsburg vs Bayern Munich: Preview
Wolfsburg form analysis
Wolfsburg came into this run of fixtures after a disastrous start to the season, sitting in the middle of the Bundesliga table. Their woes continued with a heavy 0-4 loss away at high flying Borussia Monchengladbach on November 11th. However, Wolfsburg secured a much-needed 2-1 home win over RB Leipzig on November 25th thanks to goals from Wind and Rogerio either side of Poulsen’s equalizer. This proved a false dawn though as they were stunned by struggling Bochum in a 1-3 away loss on December 2nd, with summer signing Svanberg’s strike a mere consolation.
Wolfsburg’s misery was compounded by subsequent 1-0 away losses to European hopefuls Freiburg on December 9th and relegation candidates Darmstadt on December 16th. Overall, it has been a bleak run of form for Wolfsburg recently, despite the solitary win over Leipzig. A toothless attack and porous defense have badly undermined their efforts. If the manager cannot address these issues quickly in the January transfer window, Wolfsburg would have to settle for yet another mid table finish. However, with the squad at his disposal, Wolfsburg should not be struggling this badly.
Bayern Munich form analysis
Bayern Munich came into this run of fixtures having made an excellent start in their hunt to reclaim the Bundesliga title. They dismantled rivals Borussia Dortmund 0-4 away courtesy of a Kane hat trick on November 4th and followed that up with a 4-2 home win over Heidenheim on November 11th with Kane again among the goals. Bayern then ground out a hard fought 0-1 away win at FC Cologne on November 25th, with summer signing Kane scoring the winner to continue his red-hot form.
However, Bayern suffered a shocking 1-5 home loss in their next match against high-flying Eintracht Frankfurt on December 9th, with midfielder Kimmich’s strike a mere consolation on a humbling afternoon. Looking to bounce back, Bayern returned to winning ways by comfortably dispatching Stuttgart 3-0 away from home on December 18th, with Kane’s customary goal along with strikes from summer signings Kim and Guerreiro getting the job done. Overall, Bayern still remain firmly on track to reclaim their Bundesliga crown on the strength of a prolific Kane and improved defensive reinforcements. However, the heavy loss to Frankfurt showed potential vulnerabilities that future opponents may look to exploit.
