File Photo – West Indies beat only Thailand in the T20 World Cup in 2020 © Getty West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) and Cricket West Indies have issued a joint-statement reacting to the news of the alleged sexual harassment in the Women’s senior team during the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia. Both organisations have reiterated their commitment to creating a safe environment for the players. A former West Indies women’s cricketer told Starcom Network that she endured harassment which forced her to sleep in the manager’s bedroom. The two organisations have now revealed that they will convene to review all measures taken regarding player welfare. “Both organizations have already taken significant steps to enhance player protection,” the statement said. “In 2021, improved safeguarding measures were introduced for women’s tours, strengthening security and well-being. In May 2023, CWI implemented additional policies, including single-room accommodations for the West Indies Senior Women’s team on all international assignments, ensuring parity with the men’s team. “Furthermore, we have implemented and strictly adhered to UNICEF’s Children Protection Policy, ensuring that minors never share rooms with adults under any circumstance. Additionally, we have mandated ongoing training for all officials to reinforce and uphold these standards.” West Indies had a poor campaign in 2020 where they only beat Thailand in the tournament, after which they lost to Pakistan and England before the final group game against South Africa got washed out.
