WWE’s King and Queen of the Ring tournament is set for Saturday this week and Triple H has recently added a huge stipulation to the results. This year’s winners of the tournament will receive a championship match at SummerSlam. This news comes after WWE announced that SummerSlam will be a two-night event starting in 2026. So there is a possibility that this stipulation becomes a tradition every year. If that happens, it is almost like a new path for SummerSlam with a similar model to the Royal Rumble, where the winner gets a title match at WrestleMania.
WWE wants to hype the significance of the tournament
It appears that WWE wants to hype the importance of the King and Queen of the Ring tournament. Until recently, this tournament was not even an annual event. Now that the tournament is back, the match cards are stacked with the top stars of the company and future title implications on the line. WWE has clearly placed a new level of significance on the tournament, which will begin the build toward SummerSlam this year.
Although the new stipulation does not guarantee that the winner will not wear a crown and play the role of King or Queen, it seems logical to assume that this tournament will be more about a title shot at SummerSlam than about earning the distinction of becoming royalty in WWE.
The stipulation gives predictability to WWE fans
One thing this stipulation will do is use future championship matches from SummerSlam as predictors for fans to guess who will win. In the King of the Ring Tournament, it will be either Randy Orton or Gunther who will likely face Cody Rhodes. Gunther seems like a more logical heel opponent, but The Viper and The American Nightmare have a long history as former faction teammates. In the Queen of the Ring tournament, it will be either Lyra Valkyria, Bianca Blair, or Nia Jax.
