Lack of Promotion of Hockey against Cricket
If hockey is presented as a lucrative career path to students in schools and colleges, they are much more likely to pursue it as a career. National leagues, backed by sponsors, in the manner of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for cricket, will also go a long way in enhancing the growth of hockey.
Hockey being a much shorter game than cricket also affects its commercial viability, as a 50-over cricket match or a day of Test match cricket can run advertisements throughout the day, while hockey can do the same for around two hours only.
The media also has a role to play in elevating the status of hockey and giving it coverage at par with cricket will help generate support for Indian teams when they represent the country in tournaments across the world.
