Rising from the dawn is India’s U19 star, Sachin Dhas. The New Jersey No 10 is not only making headlines for his exceptional performances in the ongoing ICC U19 Men’s World Cup 2024 but also for the intriguing story behind his name. Named after legendary Batsman Sachin Tendulkar, Dhas is leaving no stone unturned to carry forward Sachin’s legacy in the World of Cricket.
Sachin Dhas’s remarkable performance in the U19 World Cup
A name that was less known among cricket fans has now acquired a place in every cricket fan’s heart. He grabbed the limelight during the U19 World Cup 2024 when his dazzling six-hitting prowess helped India’s U19 team to reach the semi-finals. It was his convincing 116-run knock that India registered a convincing win against Nepal marching into the semi-finals. Dhas stepped up when the team needed him the most. He along with Uday Saharan (110) registered a stellar 215-run stand for the fourth wicket. It was on the back of his rewarding stand that India posted a massive 297 runs total. Later India’s bowling department did the magic of restricting Nepal to 165 for 9 guiding India to a stellar win.
In India’s semi-final clash against South Africa, Sachin Das again showed up with the willow & went on to score 96 runs off 95 balls helping India to chase the targets in 48.5 overs & winning the clash by two wickets. The chase wasn’t an easy task for India as they were initially reduced to 32-4 in 11.2 overs. However, Captain Uday Saharan (81 runs off 124 balls) & Sachin Dhas (96 off 95) stitched a rewarding stand of 171 runs off 187 balls for the fifth wicket to stabilize the innings. It was their brilliant strategic stand that guided India to two two-wicket wins.
And the hero of the spectacular win was none other than Sachin Dhas who scored a brilliant 96 runs off 95 with the help of 11 fours & a six. The 19-year-old missed out on his second consecutive hundred of the tournament as he earlier scored 116 (101) in India’s last group game against Nepal in Bloemfontein.
Sachin Dhas First Memorable Performance
Sachin Das’s remarkable journey began a couple of years back during a U19 tournament held in Pune. During the tournament, Das displayed a sheer show of power-hitting smashing massive sixes & leaving organizers astonished. They even checked the dimensions of his bat to ensure that he had played fairly. However, after strict checking it was clear that Dhas has played fairly & it’s power-hitting that helped in their rise.
Sachin Dhas Family & Early Life
Named behind legendary Sachin Tendulkar, Maharashtra’s Sachin Dhas hails from Bheed. Notably, his hometown has a limited cricketing infrastructure but still, he polished his skills by playing on half turfs. On the back of sheer determination & resilience, Das has reached this point in his career where the whole world is applauding the youngster for his skills.
Why was Sachin Dhas named behind Sachin Tendulkar?
Sachin’s father Sanjay Dhas has named him after the legendary Indian Cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar. This is because he is a die-hard fan of Sachin Tendulkar & Sunil Gavaskar. And his father named him after the legendary cricketer to pay him tribute.
Nitably, Sanja Dhas himself played cricket at the University Level and revealed that he had planned to make his son a cricketer even before has was born.
Sanjay also revealed that he prepared turf wickets by borrowing money so that his son could practice on it. Due to the water crisis in Beed keeping wickets fresh was a major headache for Sanjay Dhas. Thus, he used to call water tankers regularly to keep the pitch fresh.
Meanwhile, Sachin’s mother Surekha Das is an Assistant Police Officer in Maharashtra Police & was a kabaddi player during her time. His sister Pratiksha is preparing for UPSC exams & will probably also take up a career in Civil Services.
Hours of Practice & Fitness Regimen
Dhas has spent hours honing his skills on-field with rigorous gym sessions which reflects his commitment to excellence. His Coach Sheikh Azhar played a major role in shaping his cricketing skills & making him what he is today.
While he was always good against spin & pace the coach wanted to check his capability against bounce. So his coach used to put a three-foot-long & four feet wide iron plate at the good-length area where they used to do throw downs. For some time he struggled to get going against the height but then perfected his game as time progressed.
Third highest Run-Scorer in India’s U19 World Cup 2024
After his consecutive match-winning knocks Sachin Dhas has become the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 294 runs to his kitty. He has achieved the runs from six innings at an average of 73.50 & a strike rate of 116.66. He will now gear up for the much-awaited U19 World Cup final & will try to help India’s U19 win the coveted trophy.
