His stunning achievement at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, where he claimed India’s first-ever judo medal, has propelled him into the limelight. His journey, full of grit, resilience, and determination, has inspired countless others across the globe.
But who is Kapil Parmar? And how did he break new ground for Indian Paralympic sport?
Early Life and Kapil Parmar Disability
Born in the small village of Shivor, Madhya Pradesh, Kapil Parmar’s life changed dramatically when he suffered a severe electric shock as a child. While playing near a water pump in the fields, Kapil accidentally touched a live wire.
The incident resulted in a significant loss of vision and left him in a coma for six months. His condition, later classified under the J1 category for visually impaired athletes, meant he could perceive much less detail than those with normal vision.
Despite this life-altering event, Kapil’s determination to lead an active life never waned. In fact, it was during his recovery that he found solace in judo—a sport he had taken up in school before the accident.
Kapil Parmar’s Journey in Judo
Kapil Parmar’s introduction to judo happened in his early years, but it wasn’t until after his accident that he began to truly embrace the sport. With the guidance of his coaches, Bhagwan Das and Manoj, Kapil took up blind judo, which is adapted for visually impaired athletes.
His mentors played a significant role in encouraging him to pursue judo competitively, and Kapil trained hard, overcoming financial challenges and physical limitations to achieve his dreams.
Kapil’s rise in judo has been nothing short of phenomenal. He secured a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Para Games, a gold at the 2019 Commonwealth Championships, and impressive victories at the IBSA Judo Grand Prix in Antalya and Tbilisi in 2024.
His achievements also include a bronze at the IBSA World Games in 2023, further establishing him as one of India’s leading para-athletes.
At the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, Kapil’s performance was outstanding. He defeated Venezuela’s Marcos Dennis Blanco 10-0 in the quarterfinals and went on to win the bronze medal match against Brazil’s Elielton de Oliveira, throwing him to the mat with an ippon to secure a 10-0 victory in just 33 seconds.
Kapil Parmar’s Family and Early Challenges
Kapil Parmar was raised in a lower-income home. His father works as a cab driver, while his sister supervises a primary school. Kapil is the youngest of four brothers and a sister, and his middle brother, Lalit, has been one of his most loyal supporters throughout his journey.
Lalit often trains with Kapil and provides financial assistance to ensure that his brother can continue to compete at the highest level.
Life was not easy for the Parmar family. At one point, Kapil and his brother ran a tea stall to support themselves and their judo training. However, these struggles only strengthened Kapil’s resolve to succeed, and his determination paid off with his historic achievement at the Paralympics.
