MMA fighter Francis Ngannou has quietly returned to training at Xtreme Couture following the death of his 15-month-old son Kobe in April. Despite rejoining the gym, Ngannou has not spoken publicly about his career plans. He is currently signed with the PFL and is expected to make his debut against Renan Ferreira. In addition, opportunities remain for him in boxing as well, with previous matchups against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua leaving doors open for him.
Ngannou has returned to training
Recently, in an interview with the MMA Hour, Ngannou’s coach and friend Eric Nicksick stated that he is hopeful but unsure about the timeline for his return. Eric hopes that the former UFC champion makes his return before the end of 2024. He also thinks that keeping Francis busy is the best thing for him, as it has helped him a lot. Eric wants to see “The Predator” compete again and wants him to be able to find a purpose in competing again.
The former UFC champion is healing
Nicksick expressed relief to see Ngannou back in the gym. He also stated that Ngannou is healing, his smile is returning and his interactions with fellow fighters are becoming more lively. Eric also acknowledged that there is still emotional healing happening internally and that no one is pressuring Francis to return to fighting anytime soon. Recently, during a dinner, Ngannou expressed his determination to dedicate his next fight to his late son Kobe, which greatly influenced Nicksick.
He is expected to make his PFL debut against Ferreira
Before his son’s tragic death, the Cameroonian fighter had shown interest in both MMA and boxing, remaining committed to both sports. Although he was knocked out by Joshua in the boxing match a few months ago, there are still plenty of opportunities for him in boxing’s heavyweight division. The PFL is also keen on Ngannou’s debut, having signed him to a multi-fight contract following his departure from the UFC. He is expected to fight Renan Ferreira in his PFL debut. However, Francis is yet to schedule a fight date as fans wait to see how he recovers.
