Kemar Roach Hails Promising Prospect for West Indies Shamar Joseph as Khawaja Cleared for Gabba Test
Veteran West Indies speedster Kemar Roach predicts a bright future for fellow Windies fast bowler Shamar Joseph, as Australia prepares for the day-night Test starting Thursday at the Gabba.
The 24-year-old Joseph impressed on debut in Adelaide with a five-wicket haul, including the prized scalp of Steve Smith off his first delivery.
“Facing Shamar’s first ball, I had no clue what to expect,” admitted Smith during Australia’s training session today. “He’s got good pace, sharp angles, and can swing it away from righties. He looks promising.”
Roach, with 267 Test wickets to his name, sees immense potential in the youngster but advises him to carve his own path.
“He needs to define his own legacy, whatever that means to him – finances, records, whatever,” Roach said. “He’ll face distractions, he’s in demand, but Test cricket holds deep value for Windies players. We need to back him.”
The veteran is impressed by Joseph’s work ethic and attitude.
“He’s confident, open to learning, and has positive energy,” Roach noted. “I’m excited to be around him and witness his journey. He has the potential to be truly great if he stays dedicated.”

Meanwhile, opener Usman Khawaja received medical clearance from Cricket Australia and is confirmed for the Gabba Test. Travis Head, who recently tested positive for COVID-19, is also likely to play.
Head has been isolating and training separately, and his inclusion will depend on further fitness assessments. His availability adds depth to a formidable Australian batting lineup eager to extend their lead in the series.
With Joseph’s exciting emergence and Khawaja’s return, the second Test promises a fascinating battle between a resurgent West Indies and a dominant Australia.
West Indies will face Australia in the second test at the Gabba starting from January 25. This will be a pink ball test match.
