Why did Wanindu Hasaranga retire from Test cricket?
Wanindu Hasaranga announcing his retirement was no less than a shock for cricket fans & today we are unveiling the mystery behind it. Wanindu Hasaranga decided to retire from the Test format at the age of 26 in order to stay available for franchise leagues. Hasaranga is not a regular member of the Sri Lankan Test team & has just played two tests in the span of four years. He couldn’t showcase his magic in the longest format of cricket by sclaping just four wickets at an average of 100.75 in that four fixtures. But he managed to do well with the bat by scoring a fifty against South Africa.
Also though the prolific all-rounder was selected in some training groups ahead of the Test series by couldn’t find a place for himself in the final Test squad. However, his unnecessary involvement in those training camps has prevented him from accepting franchise cricket offers. For Instance, he pulled out of Major League Cricket in the weeks before the tournament was set to commence because of training camps.
Although according to the Sri Lanka Cricket release, the reason Hasaranga retires from Tests is in order “to prolong his career as a limited-overs specialist”, Hasaranga has no history of long-term injury”.
Unlike the dialogue with Thisara Perera who also tried to call time on his Test career in his early 20s. But it was SLC who told him to hold on to his decision, the board has no issues with Hasaranga’s decision. They don’t see any potential in him as a Test player. In fact, they are happy to have him pursue other opportunities as long as he stays available for Sri Lankan Cricket’s limited-overs commitments.
“We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball program going forward,”

Overall Wanindu Hasaranga has played 44 first-class games sclaping 102 wickets. He has three first-class tons & 19 fifties in his kitty. Hasaranga has so far represented Sri Lanka in 48 ODIs and 58 T20Is and is a key member in the limited-overs setup. For the unversed, Hasaranga is fulfilling his commitment with LPL’s team B Love Kandy where he is captaining the team. He will be a part of Sri Lanka’s upcoming Asia Cup & World Cup Campaigns.
