Vitesse vs Go Ahead Eagles: Preview
Vitesse form analysis
After a promising start beating Heracles 2-0 through goals from De Regt and Boutrah, Vitesse’s form then fell off a cliff. An embarrassing 5-0 thrashing away to Almere City followed, ruthlessly exposed at both ends as Cathline, Kitala and substitute Jacobs had them trailing 3-0 before late strikes from Peña and Robinet compounded their misery. A goalless home draw against Utrecht at least stopped the rot, but in truth offered little attacking threat. Their struggles continued during narrow 2-1 home loss to high flying Feyenoord next game – only briefly threatening when Boutrah canceled out Geertruida’s opener before Lingr’s decisive late strike.
Hopes of belated improvement were quashed after meek 1-0 defeat away to relegation strugglers PEC Zwolle in their last match, with Letteboer powerless to prevent his makeshift side slipping closer towards the drop zone. So while the win over Heracles brought initial optimism, Vitesse’s slide towards crisis deepened sharply – chronic lack of attacking spark and defensive steel leaving the Arnhem club in serious danger as the season approaches its halfway mark.
Go Ahead Eagles form analysis
Go Ahead Eagles endured a frustrating start, comfortably beaten 2-0 at home by Utrecht before rescuing a late 1-1 draw away to Excelsior despite leading for long spells – slipping up after Amofa’s opener. They impressed during a thrilling 3-2 loss at home to Ajax however, twice equalizing through summer additions Edvardsen and Kramer around Brobbey’s opener before finally succumbing late on.
Building confidence, they won impressively 2-0 away at Sparta Rotterdam next match – early goals from Willumsson and Edvardsen’s penalty enough to seal an impressive three points. But their momentum stalled after twice surrendering the lead at home to draw 2-2 with NEC despite another Edvardsen spot kick goal – denying them a third straight win despite Kuipers briefly restoring their advantage. So while the manager look side has shown real vibrancy in attack, defensive issues and struggles to maintain intensity have prevented them translating positive performances into climb from upper mid-table.
