Vijay Shankar Set to Join Tripura Cricket Association
Following in the footsteps of Hanuma Vihari, Indian cricketer Vijay Shankar is on the verge of joining the North-East team Tripura for the upcoming domestic season. The all-rounder, who has already obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), is eagerly awaiting approval from the Tripura Cricket Association to formalize his switch.
Shankar, aged 34, has represented India in both T20Is and ODIs, including the memorable World Cup clash against Pakistan in 2019. Speaking to Cricbuzz, he expressed his excitement about the potential move and explained, “I have obtained the NOC from TNCA but am yet to receive confirmation from the Tripura Cricket Association. I will be able to officially announce my switch once I get the formal approval letter from Tripura.”
Impressive Domestic Record
Having started his domestic career with Tamil Nadu in 2012, Shankar has built an impressive record over the years. He has featured in 58 Ranji Trophy matches, accumulating 3,142 runs at an average of 44.25, with 11 centuries and 16 half-centuries to his name. In List A cricket, he has played 62 matches, scoring 1,702 runs at an average of just over 34, including two hundreds and nine fifties. Additionally, he has participated in 47 T20 games, collecting 1,004 runs.
During the last season, Shankar enjoyed a successful run in first-class cricket, scoring 476 runs in six Ranji matches at an average of 52.88, with two centuries and a half-century. In List A cricket, he featured in five games, making 188 runs at an average of 37.6. However, his performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was less notable, managing only 83 runs from four outings.
Following Vihari’s Lead
Shankar’s potential move to Tripura aligns with Hanuma Vihari’s decision to represent the North-East side in the upcoming season. Vihari, who recently made his switch official on social media, expressed his gratitude towards Andhra Cricket Association while looking forward to the fresh challenge in Tripura.
In his statement, Vihari said, “After thoughtful consideration, I have made the decision to move to the Tripura Cricket Association, where I will be representing the state in all three formats of the game. While I’m grateful to Andhra Cricket Association for the role they have played in my journey so far, I believe that it’s time for a platform that aligns better with my aspirations and allows me to contribute consistently across formats.”
Elite Division Competitions Await
Both Shankar and Vihari are set to compete in the Elite division across all three formats – Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Tripura. With their experience and skill sets, the duo is expected to bolster the North-East side and add depth to the team ahead of the upcoming season.
As the approval process unfolds, fans eagerly anticipate the official announcement of Shankar’s move to Tripura and look forward to witnessing the talented all-rounder in action for his new team.
Shankar’s Experience and Leadership
Aside from his impressive batting and bowling statistics, Vijay Shankar brings valuable experience and leadership qualities to the Tripura team. With his international exposure and participation in high-pressure matches, Shankar can guide and mentor younger players, helping them develop their skills and confidence on the field. His presence in the dressing room is expected to have a positive impact on the team’s overall performance and cohesion.
Adapting to New Conditions
Moving from the familiar surroundings of Tamil Nadu to the challenging conditions of Tripura will require Shankar to adapt his game accordingly. The pitches, weather, and playing conditions in the North-East region present a unique set of challenges that players from other parts of the country may not be accustomed to. Shankar’s ability to adjust his strategy and approach to suit the conditions will be crucial in ensuring his success with the Tripura team.
Strategic Significance for Tripura Cricket
Shankar’s potential inclusion in the Tripura team not only elevates the squad’s overall skill level but also enhances the team’s strategic depth. His ability to contribute with both the bat and ball provides the captain and coach with more options and flexibility when planning strategies for matches. Shankar’s versatility as an all-rounder adds a new dimension to Tripura’s gameplay, making them a more well-rounded and competitive side in domestic competitions.
