Union Saint-Gilloise vs Toulouse: Preview
Union Saint-Gilloise form analysis
Royal Union Saint-Gilloise suffered a heavy 0-4 home loss to Mechelen in the Belgian Pro League. They struggled to get going and the scoreline accurately reflected Mechelen’s dominance.
However, they quickly bounced back with an accomplished 2-0 home win over Lugano in the Europa League playoffs first leg thanks to goals from Eckert Ayensa and Terho. Saint-Gilloise then sealed progression by grinding out a 0-1 away win in the second leg.
Domestically though, their form remains inconsistent. After twice leading against Antwerp through Eckert Ayensa penalties, Saint-Gilloise conceded twice in 5 first half minutes to draw 2-2. Most recently, they lost 0-2 at home to Genk, caught out on the break twice.
Overall, it’s been a mixed spell for Saint-Gilloise as they balance European and domestic commitments. Progressing in Europe was excellent but replicating that form in the league is crucial to sustain a shock title challenge after their brilliant start last season.
Toulouse form analysis
Toulouse registered an excellent 1-2 away win at Nantes on the opening weekend thanks to second half goals from Aboukhlal and Nicolaisen after going behind early.
They backed this up with a spirited 1-1 home draw against champions PSG, equalizing late through another Aboukhlal penalty to claim a point after Mbappe’s opener.
However, Toulouse were unable to build on those positive results, losing 0-2 away at Strasbourg courtesy of second half goals from Emegha and Bellegarde.
Most recently, they let a two goal lead slip at home against Clermont, drawing 2-2 after taking control through Aboukhlal and Magri. Ogier’s late leveler cost them two points.
Overall, it’s been a promising start for Toulouse. Turning leads into wins is the key next step in their development, but early signs suggest they have enough quality to progress through.
