Union Berlin vs Monchengladbach: Preview
Union Berlin form analysis
The Berliners have struggled in recent matches, failing to secure a win in their last four Bundesliga fixtures. Their troubles began with a resounding 3-0 defeat away to Stuttgart, conceding early on in the 16th minute to striker Serhou Guirassy. Two late goals in the 81st and 88th minutes compounded their misery. Things failed to improve against Werder Bremen the following week as they fell to a 2-0 loss, with an own goal from Robin Knoche putting them on the back foot. Their woes in front of goal continued against Eintracht Frankfurt, going down 3-0 in another lackluster attacking display.
Despite creating chances, clinical finishing evaded them. The heavy defeat to Bayer Leverkusen would have alarmed manager Urs Fischer the most. Though level at half time, three second half goals saw Union demolished 4-0 in a manner seldom seen since their promotion to the Bundesliga. Their late equalizer against Augsburg thanks to Kevin Volland’s 88th minute strike ended a four-match losing run, but a solitary point from a possible 15 paints a grim picture of their current form. Scoring just once in five games while conceding 13 goals illustrates their struggles at both ends of the pitch.
Monchengladbach form analysis
Borussia Mönchengladbach began this recent run of form with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Heidenheim. Despite taking an early lead through Alassane Pléa, they conceded an equalizer before retaking the lead courtesy of an own goal. Their attacking talent was on full display away at Freiburg as they twice led through goals from Jonas Siebatcheu and Pléa, only to be pegged back in a thrilling 3-3 draw. The 4-0 thumping of Wolfsburg showed what they are capable of when firing on all cylinders, racing to a 3-0 halftime lead and never looking back.
However, defensive fragilities surfaced again in their clash with Borussia Dortmund, twice surrendering the advantage in an action-packed encounter. An early two goal cushion was erased as Dortmund stormed back to claim a 4-2 win. The Foals returned to winning ways last time out with a 2-1 home victory over Hoffenheim. But left it late as Ngoumou grabbed an 80th minute winner after another lead was canceled out. Over this run, Gladbach have showcased impressive attacking verve but concerns remain over their defensive solidity. Maintaining concentration and leads continues to trouble manager Daniel Farke.
