Union Berlin vs Borussia Dortmund: Preview
Union Berlin form analysis
Die Eisernen has been relatively sturdy defensively but prone to inconsistent attacking displays in recent results. On February 24th, Union Berlin drew 2-2 at home with Heidenheim, coming from behind twice with goals from Gosens and Schäfer to claim a point. Earlier on February 17th though, Union Berlin managed a tightly contested 1-0 away win at Hoffenheim thanks to Aaronson’s late winner. Prior to that on February 10th, Union Berlin grinded out a 1-0 home victory over Wolfsburg with Doekhi netting the lone first half goal.
On February 7th however, Union Berlin was held to a 1-1 away draw by Mainz after Gosens leveled Burkardt’s first half strike. Union Berlin’s worst recent performance came In a 2-0 away loss at RB Leipzig on February 4th. So while Union Berlin lacks attacking firepower, they make up for it with rigid defensive organization. Sustaining intensity and converting the few chances they create better could pay dividends moving forward.
Borussia Dortmund form analysis
Borussia Dortmund’s typically brilliant attack led by stars Füllkrug and Malen has continued scoring goals recently. However, defensive issues have surfaced leading to unexpected dropped points. On February 25th, Dortmund fell 3-2 at home to Hoffenheim after surrendering the lead twice despite Malen and Schlotterbeck goals. Earlier on February 17th, Dortmund drew 1-1 away at Wolfsburg after Füllkrug’s opener was erased by Gerhardt.
Before that on February 10th was Dortmund’s most complete performance, a 3-0 home thrashing of Freiburg powered by a Malen brace and late Füllkrug strike. On February 3rd though, Dortmund was held to a 0-0 away draw by Heidenheim, failing to translate their control into goals. Dortmund’s best recent outing was a 3-1 home win over Bochum on January 28th led by a Füllkrug brace. So while Dortmund’s brilliant attack continues humming, tightened defensive organization is vital towards resuming dominant form across 90 minutes.
