Union Berlin vs Augsburg: Preview
Union Berlin form analysis
FC Union Berlin made a positive impact away at Borussia Dortmund, striker Füllkrug netting before a late collapse saw them lose 4-2. However, familiar issues quickly disrupted momentum as defensive lapses proved costly in a 0-3 home defeat to Stuttgart. These problems persisted as Union were comfortably beaten 2-0 at overachievers Werder Bremen.
Heavy defeat followed away at high flying Eintracht Frankfurt, utterly outclassed in a chastening 0-3 loss. The brutal reality check continued as Leverkusen thrashed Union 0-4 at home, lacking steel, craft or conviction throughout. Overall, Union have lacked structure or authority in their play so far, unable to control or compete at intense levels shown previously. Maintaining intensity and managing games better is vital if Fischer’s counter attacking style is to succeed again. Addressing growing issues in defence and attack must be the priority if this poor early form is to improve. But progress must come quickly if Europe is still the target.
Augsburg form analysis
Augsburg made a poor start however, defensive issues costing them in a 1-2 opening loss at home to Darmstadt. But an impressive response followed, turning around a 0-2 deficit away at Heidenheim to win 5-2, new striker Demirović netting twice. This determination surfaced again to beat Wolfsburg 3-2 from behind despite late pressure, captain Uduokhai popping up with a rare goal. Sloppy defending returned briefly though in a 1-1 draw away at FC Köln, relying on goal machine Tietz to earn a point. And problems dealing with direct approaches caused them issues again as Hoffenheim edged Augsburg 1-1 at home, Demirović rescuing another draw.
Overall, Augsburg’s entertaining style has relied heavily on moments of individual quality so far to overcome persistent defensive weaknesses. Greater organisation and authority through midfield must be the priority if familiar struggles are to be avoided. But if productivity is shared and coherence improves, Augsburg’s strong spirited displays could continue moving them up the table.
