The underdogs have suddenly did the unexpected! Yes we are talking about the Uganda team who has now become the new star of World cricket after qualifying for the t20 World Cup 2024. This marks Uganda’s first appearance in an ICC event which is a remarkable feat in itself for the African team. Uganda secured this qualification after defeating Rwanda in their last round of fixtures in the African leg of the qualifiers. Though Zimbabwe won their final fixture against Kenya it was all over for them when Uganda beat Rwanda as their qualification was depended on Uganda’s loss in the last fixture of league stage.
A Glimpse of Uganda’s Journey in the ICC T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier 2023
The Ugandan team began their campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifier 2023 in Windhoek, Namibia. Ranked 23 among the T20I team, Uganda faced some renowned opponents & outclassed them in best possible way. Their memorable performance came against Zimbabwe on November 26,2023 when they outclassed Zimbabwe with a five wicket win to register their first win over a full member team in T20is.
Uganda’s tactical strategy on the field was executed flawlessly during their fixture against Zimbabwe. After winning the toss Uganda opted to field first & restricted Zimbabwe to a total of 136-7. It was Dinesh Nakrani who emerged as a star bowler with stunning figures of 3-14. The chase was powered by Riazat Ali Shah and Alpesh Ramjani, culminated in a historic win, propelling Uganda to the third position in the points table.
Uganda further continued it’s winning sores by defeating Kenya by a margin of 33 runs in November 29, 2023. Simon Ssesazi’s blistering knock of 60 runs & Dinesh Nakrani’s stunning bowling spell helped Uganda to exert their dominance in the qualifiers.

The final obstacle in Uganda’s qualification was Rwanda & they conquered it outstandingly. In Uganda’s last fixture of African leg of qualifiers against Rwanda, they opted to bowl first & outclassed Rwanda for just 65 runs in 18.5 overs. Uganda further chased the target in 8.1 overs & scripted history by qualifying for the ICC men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Namibia is the first team from the African region to qualify for the men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

With this historic feat Uganda joined the esteemed teams of World Cricket who have managed to secure qualification for the Men’s t20 World Cup 2024. The other teams who are qualified for the marquee event are West Indies (host), United States of America (host), Australia, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ireland, Scotland, Papua New Guinea, Canada, Oman, Nepal, and Namibia.
Looking at Uganda’s form & determination we think they will give tough competition to World’s top teams in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 which will be played from June 4 to 30 in West Indies & USA.
