UFC São Paulo was not able to go off without a hitch as several Brazilian fighters missed weight for the upcoming event. The good thing is that weight concerns haven’t hindered the main event of UFC Fight Night, as Zelton Almeida will take on Derrick Lewis in a heavyweight bout. The Brazilian will defend his five-fight UFC win streak against Lewis, attempting to extend his UFC record for most knockout wins.
Several fighters missed out the weight
As far as the rest of the card is concerned, many fighters have missed weight on the scales and will have a percentage of their pay confiscated. On the main card, fan favorite Ismael Bonfim topped the scale at 159.5 pounds for his lightweight bout against Vince Pichel. In the prelims, Bantamweight Victor Hugo lifted 3.5 pounds over the limit, and women’s strawweight Eduarda Moura also missed a chance at the full purse after coming in at 119.5 pounds.
The action begins on Saturday
Despite many hometown fighters missing weight, every fight on the card is still expected to go ahead. The action begins on November 4 (Saturday) in São Paulo, Brazil. Ahead of his main event match this weekend, Derrick Lewis recently found himself in legal trouble when he was reportedly arrested in Texas last week. He was taken into custody after being caught speeding in his Lamborghini in Houston, Texas.
The trouble didn’t affect Lewis
“The Black Beast” was reportedly driving at 136 mph in a 50-mph zone, resulting in his arrest. Lewis was later released on $100 bail and will appear in court next month, on December 27. These issues did not impact Derrick’s trip to Brazil and during the pre-match media day, he was asked about his legal trouble. In his classic style, Lewis quickly downplayed the seriousness of the situation by joking that he was not even arrested.
