Matheesha Pathirana’s unwanted record in ODI World Cups
The Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana grabbed the limelight but for the wrong reason. He became the second bowler to concede 90-plus runs in World Cups twice. The first occasion when Pathirana conceded 90 plus runs in ODI World Cups was on his debut in a marquee event against South Africa where he gave away 95 runs in ten overs & followed it up with 90 runs in nine overs on Tuesday. And then adding to his tally he again conceded 90 runs in 9 overs against Pakistan in Match 8 of the ODI World Cup 2023 getting in the wrong record book. The only bowler who leads this undesirable list is Kevin O’Brien who conceded 95 runs & 90 runs in successive matches in the 2015 edition of the World Cup.
2) Pakistan completes highest successful run chase in World Cup history
The Men in Green blasted all cylinders to chase a huge target of 345 runs during the PAK vs SL ODI World Cup 2023 clash & register their names in the records book. With this successful chase, Pakistan completes the highest run chase in World Cup history surpassing Ireland’s 328 chase against England in Bengaluru in 2011. This run chase also marks Pakistan’s second-highest run chase in ODIs behind Australia’s chase of 329 runs in Lahore achieved during 2022. Pakistan’s wicket-keeper batter has scripted his name in the records book during the PAK vs SL ODI World Cup clash. Rizwan played a blistering knock of unbeaten 131 to become the highest run-scoring wicket-keeper for Pakistan in ODIs. He surpassed Kamran Akmal’s 124 against West Indies in Brisbane in 2005 to achieve this rare feat. In fact, Riwan registered the second-highest score for Pakistan in World Cups behind Imran Nazir’s 160 against Zimbabwe in Kingston in 2007. It was because of Rizwan’s match-saving ton that Pakistan registered an impressive win in the ODI World Cup 2023.
4) Fastest Century by an Asian Batsman
Sri Lankan batter, Kusal Mendis amassed a ton off 65 balls against Pakistan to become the fastest centurion for Sri Lanka. Not only this his power-pack knock helped him to become the sixth fastest batsman to score a ton in World Cups. He also became the fastest Asian batter in the World Cup to score a ton. This record was previously held by Asioan batter Kumar Sangakkar who scored a brilliant ton in just 70 balls against England in World Cup 2015. Notably during the PAK vs SL fixture, Mendis was the highest run-scorer for Sri Laka returning with scores of 122 runs off 77 balls. Mendis (122) along with Samarawickrama (108) guided Sri Lanka to a mammoth 344 runs for opponents to chase.
5) Highest score on World Cup debut for Pakistan
Pakistan’s debutant turned heads around by registering a gleaming ton right on his debut. Yes, we are talking about none other than Abdullah Shafique who made his debut for Pakistan during Sri Lanka fixture & scripted history by scoring a century. Shafique scored a gleaming 111-run knock to register the highest individual score on the World Cup debut for Pakistan. With his 111-run knock, Shafique surpassed Mohsin Khan’s 82-run record against Sri Lanka in the 1983 World Cup. At the young age of 23 years & 324 days, Shafique is the second youngest batter to score a World Cup ton for Pakistan behind Imam-Ul-Haq who scored a tin in 23 years & 195 days.
6) Second Highest Partnership for Pakistan in the World Cup
Pakistan registered several records during the PAK vs SL ODI World Cup 2023 clash. And adding to the list is the Abdullah Shafoque & Mohammed Rizwan’s 176-run stand. The duo registered the second-highest run stand for Pakistan for any wicket in World Cup history. The highest partnership for Pakistan was stitched between Saeed Anwar & Wajahatullah Wasti as the dup cored 194 runs opening stand. Their stand came against New Zealand during the epic semifinals of the ODI World Cup 1999. But moving ahead, Shafique & Rizwan did the magic in Pakistan’s chase by stitching a valuable 176-run stand & guiding Pakistan towards the highest run chase in World Cup history.
7) First ever 4 tons in a World Cup fixture
The PAK vs SL fixture was special in many senses as rare records were achieved during the fixture. Notably, batters of both sides made the use of batters friendly conditions to the fullest & went on to score century after century. A record total of four centuries was scored during the epic fixture where Kusal Mendis (122), Sadeera Samarawickrama (108), Abdullah Shafique (111), and Mohammad Rizwan (131 not out) all registered huge scores. It is the third instance where four batters registered tons in an ODI fixture. Notably, it was the first time that four tons were registered in a World Cup fixture. Before this, such a feat was never achieved during a World Cup fixture.
