The UFC welterweight fighter Tony Ferguson was once a strong and fierce man, but the last few years have not been good for him. Ferguson’s last win in the promotion was against Donal Cerrone in 2019. Since then, he has been on a long seven-fight losing streak. “El Cucuy” is keen to prove himself in his last match in the promotion.
In the meantime, Ferguson tried many training methods to get back to his winning rhythm. The former interim UFC lightweight champion also trained with David Goggins for some time and he has also been cornered by Goggins in one of his fights. Now, Tony is just eyeing a comeback for his last fight in Abu Dhabi and has returned to sparring again. Ferguson will take on Michael Chiesa at the UFC Abu Dhabi. Chiesa is also on a three-fight losing streak, but Ferguson is in desperate need for a win.
Ferguson went back to sparring
During an interview with UFC, Ferguson revealed how he has once again resorted to quality sparring.
“I went back to sparring, I haven’t sparred in seven years, where I’ve had training partners, I put in about 120 rounds or more of sparring, I put in a lot of wrestling, good training partners, good vibes, a good team,” said Ferguson.
“El Cucuy” then elaborated that after his loss to Paddy Pimblett, he had to undergo elbow and knee surgery. The surgeries have slowed him down and he had to go back to the basics to get back up. He also expressed his desire to continue fighting in the UFC in the future.
Dana White wants Ferguson to retire
However, UFC head Dana White is not in favor of Tony Ferguson continuing in MMA. Ahead of UFC Dhabi, White was asked his thoughts on Ferguson’s future in the UFC. Without hesitation, Dana stated that he would like to see Tony retire. This is not the first time the UFC head has wanted Ferguson to retire. When Tony lost to Paddy Pimblett at UFC 296, White said he wanted Ferguson to retire from the sport. Now it is up to “El Cucuy” to prove himself and leave the sport with a win.
