UFC Abu Dhabi saw Tony Ferguson get his eighth consecutive loss. Ferguson lost to Michael Chiesa within the first round of the fight by rear-naked choke submission. However, “El Cucuy” has left his fans in suspense as he put only one glove in the octagon, hinting at a comeback despite suffering a brutal defeat. Ferguson’s losing streak in the UFC began in 2020 when he lost to Justin Gaethje. Since then, he is still searching for a victory.
Ferguson is not done yet
Ferguson’s future in the UFC has been a subject of much speculation, especially after UFC CEO Dana White clearly said that Tony would not be getting any more fights. He even expressed his desire to see Ferguson retire. However, “El Cucuy” doesn’t seem to want to leave the sport. His statements in the post-fight interview state that he is not willing to retire. “I am not going to put both gloves down. I’m going to put one and I’m going to keep the other one just in case,” said Ferguson.
Chiesa ended his losing streak
The fight was very crucial for both Ferguson and Chiesa. Tony has been on a losing streak for five years and entered the Octagon amid fans’ concerns. On the other hand, Michael Chiesa was struggling and was on a three-fight losing streak. Chiesa started aggressively in the fight and completely dominated the first round, earning a rear-naked choke submission win. This victory ended his losing streak and began in 2021. While Ferguson has surpassed the previous record of seven consecutive defeats held by BJ Penn.
El Cucuy has immense love for the sport
Despite the defeat and uncertainties surrounding his career, Ferguson’s statement makes it seem like he is not someone who is ready to leave the sport with a loss. In a video captured by the promotion, he was also heard telling the social media team that he is not done yet and it is not the time yet. Ferguson’s decision to not retire and his gesture of putting down just one glove have given hope to his fans for a potential comeback. However, his future in the UFC is still uncertain. But his determination and love for the sport are clearly evident.
