Tom Latham Replaces Tim Southee as New Zealand Test Captain Ahead of India Series
New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee has stepped down as the team’s Test captain ahead of their three-match series in India. Tom Latham will take over the role as New Zealand seeks a fresh direction in their leadership.
Southee, who has captained the Black Caps since Kane Williamson relinquished the role in 2022, led the team to six wins and two draws from 14 matches.
However, the 35-year-old’s leadership has come under scrutiny following New Zealand’s struggles, including a surprising series draw against Bangladesh at home and a lackluster performance in Sri Lanka.
In a statement, Southee said that stepping down was in the best interest of the team and that he would now focus on his on-field performances. “Captaining the Black Caps in a format that’s so special to me has been an absolute honor and a privilege,” Southee said. “I believe the way I can best serve the team moving forward is by focusing on my performances and helping New Zealand win Test matches.”
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead praised Southee’s decision, calling him “a fantastic player and a very good leader” who is well respected by both players and staff. Stead emphasized Southee’s importance to the team, even without the captaincy, and highlighted his nearly 17 years of international service.
Latham, who has been a key figure in New Zealand cricket for years, now has the task of leading the side against India in a crucial World Test Championship series. The first Test will begin in Bengaluru on October 16.
