The UFC is a sport full of bad bloodshed, intense rivalries, and fighters desperately trying to get to the level where they can win the UFC world title. Despite being such a serious sport, there have been a lot of comical and weird moments over the past few years. In this article, we will tell you about some unintentional but hilarious moments that were really funny to watch.
The Early celebration
The Brazilian leg lock master Rousimar ‘Toquinho’ Palhares has had many awkward moments during his 5-year stint in the UFC. One of his funniest moments was crying on his way to the octagon for his fight with Jeremy Horn and two instances in which he refused to release a heel hook on his detractors, the second of whom released him from the company. Without a doubt, his weirdest moment was at UFC 134, where he faced Jim Miller. UFC 134 was special for him because it returned to his home country, Brazil, after a decade. Rousimar amazed everyone by demonstrating his striking skills, and at the end of the first round, he also injured Miller with a head kick that knocked his opponent down.
After a few minutes, Palhares thought he had sealed the victory and promptly jumped over the octagon fence to celebrate. But the fight wasn’t yet called off by referee Herb Dean. While Miller was staggering on his feet, Dean was persuading Palhares to come down and continue the bout. A few moments later, an unsteady Miller dropped Palhares with his combination, but he quickly recovered and pinned Miller to the ground before outplaying him in the next two rounds to win in a clear unanimous decision. Even though the fight was over, the only moment people were talking about was Palhares’ early celebration.
The blue speedo
Dennis Hallman has always been a serious fighter inside the octagon. He was a grappling specialist and was noted for his two epic wins over legendary welterweight champion Matt Hughes. By 2011, Dennis was in his fifth UFC stint, and he had a record of 2-1 in the Octagon. Hallman was put against Brian Ebersole at UFC 133. It was not expected that this fight would gain any limelight after the event, but when he entered the cage and stripped off his clothes to reveal a blue speedo as his fight attire, everyone in the audience was stunned, along with the UFC officials.
The crowd also watched Hallman dominate in the opening rounds of the fight, and Ebersole finished off Holman with a series of elbows at the end of the round. Later, Hallman explained the incident and admitted that he was wearing a speedo after losing a bet. UFC president Dana White was so frightened by the incident that he not only demanded more regulations when it came to the fight attire, but he even gave Ebersol a special post-fight bonus for getting those awful shorts off TV so quickly. Since that event, no fighter has ever been seen in an inappropriate outfit.
Lewis removing his shorts
Derrick Lewis has always been an entertaining person, especially in his post-fight interviews. During his fight with Alexander Volkov, after two rounds, he knocked him out with the remaining seconds, but what stunned everyone was Lewis stripping off his fight shorts, which left him in just a pair of boxer shorts. Thankfully, there was nothing revealing like during Dennis Hallman’s fight. However, it was Lewis’ explanation that made the moment bizarre. When Joe Rogan asked him to explain why he took off his shorts, Lewis gave a simple answer and said he was feeling inside his shorts. This was not the first time that the Black Beast made statements like this. After his fight with Travis Brown, Derrick claimed that he wasn’t hurt by body kicks, he just wanted to sh*t.
Vampire Hunter
Diego Sanchez is one of the most famous fighters in the history of the UFC, as he has always attracted so many fans because of his absolute eccentricity. His attempts to use stevia for purifying water and random chanting always had a certain amount of craziness. However, the last instance of Diego’s craziness predates his 2012 fight with Jake Ellenberger. Sanchez was always seen as a little weird, but this fight took his weirdness to a whole other level. On that fight night, when Music from Psalm 150 began to play, Diego came out carrying a huge, over-sized crucifix in front of him, mumbling incoherently about God.
Diego never kept his faith in God and Christianity a secret, as he was always seen praying before his opening fights in 2005. But no one has guessed why he chose to do it, looking more like a vampire hunter than an MMA fighter while holding a giant crucifix. Despite his unique entrance, the fight didn’t favour him, and he lost by unanimous decision. Although this defeat didn’t change Diego’s idiosyncratic personality, he was never seen with a giant crucifix again in any of his fights.
