Texas boxer Jermell Charlo was arrested on Saturday and charged with misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury to one of his family members. Charlo was released on Monday after posting a bond. The identity of the victim of the alleged attack has not been revealed.
On Tuesday, court records revealed that Charlo’s wife, Chyenne Westbrook, filed for a temporary restraining order and initiated divorce proceedings against Charlo. Currently, he is the unified light middleweight world champion, having previously won the undisputed championship in the same division.
An audio recording surfaced online
On Wednesday, an audio recording surfaced in which Jermell was discussing an incident and admitting he attacked a woman, causing significant damage, and possibly breaking her orbital bone. Later, the woman contacted the police. It remains uncertain whether this incident is the same as his most recent arrest.
In the recorded audio, the 33-year-old also insults the woman, describing her as acting tough but ultimately inflexible. He states that she hit him forcefully in the eye, resulting in swelling and discoloration. Despite this, she reported the incident to the police, encouraging the boxer to criticize her actions.
The boxer faced charges in 2018 too
This is not the first time Charlo has faced legal issues related to violence against women. Back in 2018, he faced domestic violence charges for allegedly strangling his then-girlfriend. Although Jermell was eventually acquitted, it seems that the current situation might pose greater challenges for him.
Jermell recently lost a tough match
In his most recent fight, Charlo moved up to the 168-pound weight class in September for a significant opportunity against Canelo Alvarez. Charlo had a challenging match, he lost almost every round and ultimately got a knockdown in Round 7. This resulted in a decision loss, costing Charlo the opportunity to claim the undisputed super middleweight championship. It is noteworthy that Jermell Charlo’s twin brother, Jermall Charlo, is the current WBC Middleweight champion in a different weight class and has challenged Alvarez.
