Swindon Town vs Exeter: Preview
Swindon Town form analysis
Swindon’s recent run of games has showcased attacking endeavors but recurring issues in defense conceding cheap goals. They started with a disappointing 1-0 home loss to Gillingham in the EFL Trophy, caught out by an early second half strike. Problems remained evident next match despite rallying in a 3-2 away loss at MK Dons, going behind early before equalizing through Young but made to pay for more slack defending.
Back came the defensive issues in an extraordinary 4-7 home loss to Aldershot in the FA Cup, netting 4 times but totally unraveling at the back from start to finish. Swindon’s openness was exploited again in their next match, losing 1-3 away at Colchester after going ahead early thanks to more poor defending. Most recently they lost another thriller 2-4 at home to Stockport, with goals from Kemp and Young insufficient due to more sloppy play at both ends. Overall, Swindon must tighten up defensively if their undoubted attacking threats are to flourish this season.
Exeter form analysis
Exeter City’s recent run of games has showcased occasional attacking sparks but generally struggled at both ends of the pitch. They started with an expected 0-2 home loss to Derby in the EFL Trophy, unable to cope with the visitor’s slick play. There was an improved performance next match as they rallied to draw 1-1 at home with Lincoln thanks to Trevitt’s late equalizer.
Exeter then came agonizingly close to a cupset in their next game, drawing 2-2 at Middlesbrough after twice going ahead through Trevitt before conceding late. However, problems at both ends returned in a disappointing 0-2 home loss to Wigan in the FA Cup, caught out twice by sloppy defending. Most recently, Exeter’s struggles continued in a heavy 0-3 away defeat at Fleetwood, totally outplayed after conceding early. Overall, Exeter have lacked attacking threat while also looking extremely vulnerable defensively in this spell. Finding form and consistency is essential if they are to push for promotion this season.
