Suryakumar is all set to miss the T20I series due to an ankle injury sustained during the South Africa series. The injury will keep Suryakumar out of action for at least six weeks which brings his participation in the Afghanistan T20I series under jeopardy.
The BCCI confirmed Suryakumar’s absence & spoke in depth about his rehabilitation at the NCA. Sources within the BCCI revealed that he will be tested with a stint in the Ranji Trophy in February before giving a go-to signal for IPL.
“Surya has reported to NCA for rehab work and the Medical Science team as of now has ruled him injured. He won’t be able to play against Afghanistan which starts in three weeks. Since he is unlikely to be selected for Tests, he will possibly play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in February to check his fitness before playing in the IPL,” a source privy to BCCI told IANS.
Who will come in as Suryakumar Yadav’s Replacement?
With key players like Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya unavailable, the selectors may face a captaincy conundrum. Adding to the woes is the absence of Gaikwad who is sidelined due to a broken finger. There is also an additional void created in the lineup in the wicket-keeping department as Ishan Kishan has withdrawn from the Test series due to personal reasons. In Ishan’s absence, KS Bharat or Jitesh Sharma can walk in as a replacement.
The BCCI, out of respect for the players’ privacy, chose not to delve into Kishan’s decision, recognizing the impact that irregular selections can have on a player’s mental health. As the team comes together to confront Afghanistan, the hurdles extend beyond the cricket pitch, encompassing the intricate task of harmonizing performance expectations with the well-being of players in the rigorous realm of international cricket.
