Suryakumar Yadav Seeks to Rectify ODI Template: “My Numbers are Really Bad”
Suryakumar Yadav is determined to improve his performance in One Day Internationals (ODI) after a slow start to his career in the format. Despite his impressive performances in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL) and T20Is, Yadav has confessed that his numbers in ODIs have been disappointing.
Yadav has played only seven ODIs for India so far, scoring just 124 runs at an average of 24.80. These numbers are far from his usual standards, and he is determined to rectify the situation. Yadav understands that consistency is key in international cricket, and he is working hard to improve his game in the ODI format.
In the aftermath of his match-winning half-century in the third T20I against West Indies, Yadav candidly reflected on his struggles in the ODI format. He said that his poor numbers in ODI cricket are accepted and stressed the importance of being honest with himself. Yadav recognized that the limited opportunities he has had in ODIs require him to carefully manage his innings, especially when the team loses early wickets.
The ODI World Cup will take place in October and team management has a lot of expectations from Suryakumar Yadav. Reflecting on the significant importance of his performance in ODI squad, Surya said:
“If I am honest with myself, my numbers in ODIs are really bad. And there’s no shame in admitting that; everyone knows that already. You need to be honest with yourself; but then, getting better is also important. That is what Rohit and Rahul sir have told me that because I don’t play a lot of ODIs, I need to practice and think as to what I can do. I can take my time, and if I happen to be at the crease in the last 10-15 overs, then I need to think for myself as to what I can do for the team.”
Yadav disclosed that Sharma and Dravid have encouraged him to face approximately 45-50 deliveries during his innings, regardless of his scoring rate. Their guidance is aimed at providing stability to the team and allowing Yadav the freedom to play his natural game during his time at the crease. The batsman now recognizes the responsibility bestowed upon him to convert the opportunity into a strong performance, fulfilling the requirements of the team.
With the ODI World Cup approaching, India has two more series, the Asia Cup and a home series against Australia, before the final squad of 15 players must be named by September 5. However, Yadav’s chances of making the team also depend on the recovery timelines of injured players KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer.
Time may be running out for Yadav to strengthen his case for World Cup selection, but he remains optimistic. He understands the upcoming series as crucial for his preparation for the spot. In concluding remarks, Surya said:
“We have seven or eight games before the World Cup, which is enough for preparation,” Suryakumar said. “We also have a camp, where we will all gather. It’s important to spend time with each other, and know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.”
Additionally, Yadav is working on improving his shot selection and decision-making during crucial moments of the game. The fact is making smarter choices while batting will help him build substantial innings and contribute significantly to the team’s total.
Suryakumar Yadav’s journey in international cricket has been a mix of highs and lows. While he has excelled in T20 cricket, his performances in ODIs have been below par. However, he is definitely a game changer and once he gets rhythm in ODIs, team India will feel that they have found the last missing piece of puzzle.
