Suresh Raina, a former Indian player, believes Shubman Gill can duplicate Rohit Sharma’s 2019 success. He predicted Gill will do well and set records when the 2023 World Cup will happen in his country. Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, made history in 2019 by being the first player to hit five hundreds in an ODI World Cup. Rohit Sharma had a stellar performance, in his matchups with the opposing bowlers. He scored centuries against South Africa, Pakistan, England, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The leading scorer was the famous Indian opener, who totaled 648 runs. Scroll down to read Suresh Raina Backs Shubham Gill Ahead Of World Cup
Suresh Raina Backs Shubham Gill Ahead Of World Cup
Rohit’s opening partner, Gill, has solidified his spot in the team. In 2023, he has already scored more than 1,000 runs in the 50-over format and is now ranked as the No. 2 hitter in the ICC ODI Rankings. Gill demonstrated his batting skill on spin-friendly surfaces by smashing a respectable century against Bangladesh in the just concluded Asia Cup 2023. The batsman from Punjab has played 33 ODIs in all, scoring 1739 runs, including 5 hundred, at an average of 63.
He has been constant for one and a half years. In the middle versus West Indies, he had trouble, but in the Asia Cup, he recovered well. He is striking 50s and even 100s with ease now that he has improved his technique, seems upbeat, and stopped going out against the West Indies at 40. Suresh Raina told Jio Cinema,
“I am aware that he aspires to be a celebrity and the next Virat Kohli, and that he already exudes that aura. After the World Cup, we will talk about him more frequently. He is playing in a really strong form with his hand speed. He can play fast bowlers extremely effectively with a straight or a flick if they don’t swing the ball, and spinners don’t know where to bowl to him.
His mentality won’t end here. Gill may accomplish for India in 2019 what Rohit Sharma accomplished in the World Cup. He will get 50 overs to bat, so here is where his batting will get going. He has natural leadership qualities, in my opinion, through his play.”
Gill, however, only accumulated 126 runs in 3 games in the ODI series against the West Indies. But then, at the Asia Cup, he found his form again, scoring 302 runs and dominating the batting rankings.
