Sunrisers Hyderabad Must Fix Chasing Woes, Says Vettori
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) coach Daniel Vettori acknowledged the importance of being adaptable in the IPL after his team’s surprising defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Thursday. The loss came despite SRH setting a seemingly healthy target of 207 runs.
Vettori pointed to the early dismissals of openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma as a turning point. “We were confident based on our recent scores,” he said. “But today, the openers had an off day, and that’s how cricket goes. We can’t expect them to perform flawlessly every match.”
Talking about how Hyderabad openers have dominated the game with unreal consistentcy, Vettori remarked, in”We also know that it’s been set up by the openers and today they had an off day and that’s cricket and you have off days. We don’t expect them to perform 14 games.”
He highlighted the need to adjust their approach for the upcoming match in Chennai. “While the surface here allowed for scoring runs, chasing 207 makes playing an anchor role difficult,” Vettori explained. “We need to be aggressive, but we’ll analyze chasing strategies for the next game.”
Vettori also praised the performance of pacer Jaydev Unadkat, who could be crucial on slower pitches. “Unadkat is particularly effective when the surface offers bounce and helps him stop the ball,” he said.
Meanwhile, RCB captain Faf du Plessis expressed relief after his team’s long-awaited win. “The last two games showed great fight,” he said. “We came close in the previous matches against SRH and KKR, but winning is crucial to rebuild confidence.”
Du Plessis emphasized the importance of collective batting efforts. “We’re seeing more contributions from the batsmen now,” he said. “Earlier, it was mainly Virat Kohli scoring. Rajat Patidar and Finn Allen getting runs is a positive sign. In high-scoring games, everyone needs to contribute.”
Du Plessis also credited leg-spinner Karn Sharma for his impact, especially on larger grounds. “Legspinners are vital in T20 cricket, and Karn was excellent today,” he concluded.
Hyderabad shouldn’t take this loss as a big blow because they did a few mistakes such as being too aggressive when wickets were falling. A lot to learn from this loss as it is said a loss and less in group stages is better than loss in knockout stage.
