West Indies & Trinbago Knight Riders all-rounder Sunil Narine became the first ever cricketer to receive a red card in Cricket. Now you might be thinking why red card given in cricket? So let us clarify the concept, CPL has introduced a new ‘red card’ rule to keep a check on poor over rates of the teams in the T20 format.
Let’s have a look at the slow over-rate rules in the CPL 2023 Season
If behind the required run-over rate at the start of the 18th over, one additional player must enter the fielding circle for a total number of five players within the circle for a total of five players inside the circle.
Probably if behind the run rate at the start of the 19th over, two additional fielders must enter the fielding circle for a total of six inside the circle
If behind the run rate at the start of the final over, teams will lose a player from the field selected by the captain-& have six inside the fielding circle.
There will be an onus on batting teams to keep the game moving & if they fail to do so. After a first & final warning from the umpires, the batting team will be slapped with a five-run penalty for each instance of time wasting.
With Trinbago Knight Riders being on their over-rate by the beginning of the final over, the umpire showed a red card to Kieron Pollard’s team & because of that Narine had to leave the field for the final over. TKR franchise then has to field just 10 players in the final over of the innings against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.

Narine was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3-24 in 4 overs including the prized wicket of Joshua Da Silva for 18, Jyd Goolie for 11 & Corbin Bosch for 30 off 21 balls. The Patriots posted 178 for 5 with Captain Sherfane Rutherford top-scoring with 62 off 38 balls with 5 sixes & 4 fours.
In the chase of 178 runs, TKR easily chased the target in 17.1 overs with Nicholas Pooran top scoring for them with 61 runs off 32 balls embellished with 4 sixes & 5 fours. Captain Pollard too amassed 37 runs off 16 balls in an innings laced with 5 sixes with their star player Andre Russell remaining unbeaten on 23 off 8 balls with 2 sixes and 2 fours.
Trinbago Knight Riders will lock horns with Barbados Royals in their next fixture to be played on August 31.
