India overcame Bangladesh by seven wickets on Thursday thanks to the captain’s unbeaten century, which also marked the team’s fourth victory in four World Cup matches. The star batter is getting closer to Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most ODI hundreds. It took Kohli three runs to get his century and two more runs for India to meet their goal of 257, but he finished the match with style, hitting a six-off spinner Nasum Ahmed. Shubman Gill (52), the skipper, and Rohit Sharma (48) all contributed to India’s pursuit while Kohli was brilliant at the bat. In the meanwhile Shreyas Iyer, the number four batter, fell for 19 runs. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was dissatisfied with the batters’ intentions after both Gill and Iyer were dismissed for poor wicket-keeping. Sunil Gavaskar Blasts Indian Duo Shubman Gill And Shreyas Iyer.
Gavaskar said on Star Sports, “Shreyas Iyer ran out of patience. He lost his wicket when batting on 19. Shubman Gill (was batting on) fifty (52), threw his wicket away. It’s never what Kohli does. Very rarely will Kohli give up a wicket. He makes you work for his victory. And you do need that. He realized he had a chance to reach 100 and should take it when he reached 70–80.
“Hundreds don’t arrive every day,” the former captain of India continued.
Gavaskar emphasized, “You must understand how to get 100, especially for Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill. While Shreyas Iyer does not receive hundreds, Shubman Gillis at least receives hundreds. He is wasting his opportunities to bat at number four on pitches as good as these and attacks as toothless as this.”
India finished on 261 for 3, more than eight overs ahead of schedule as they made their way home.
With his 48th ODI century, Kohli is just one wicket short of the record of 49 hundred at this level held by the great Tendulkar of India.
With this century, Kohli has reached over fifty runs in four innings, having previously scored 85 and 55 not out in pool matches against Australia and Afghanistan. Kohli faced 97 balls, including six fours and four sixes.
However, Bangladesh faced an uphill battle to make it to the semi-finals after suffering their third loss in four games.
