Noman Ali became the first Pakistani spinner to bag a Test hat-trick © AFP Stats highlights from the fast-moving opening day’s play of the second Test between Pakistan and West Indies in Multan: 20 wickets to fall in the opening day’s play is the most ever in a day of Test cricket on Pakistan soil, surpassing 19 on the second day of the previous Test in the series. Of the six instances of 16 or more wickets falling in a day’s play in Pakistan, five have come in Multan. 1 This was the first instance of both teams getting bowled out in the first day of a Test in Asia and 14th such instance overall, the last coming in Cape Town in New Year’s Test of 2024. The previous most in Asia was 18 wickets in the Test between India and West Indies in Delhi in 1987, while the previous most on Pakistani soil was 15 in the match between Pakistan and New Zealand in Lahore in 1996. 6 Noman Ali became the sixth Pakistan bowler and the first spinner among the six to take a hat-trick in Tests. He is the ninth bowler overall and third spinner to take a hat-trick in Pakistan after New Zealand’s Peter Petherick and Bangladesh’s Alok Kapali. Noman also became just the second spinner to take a hat-trick against West Indies after Keshav Maharaj in Gros Islet in 2021. He became only the fifth bowler to do so after Sydney Barnes (7), Charlie Turner (6), Alec Bedser (6), and fellow countryman Yasir Shah (5). 2 The top three scorers for West Indies in this innings were their last three batters: Gudakesh Motie (55), Jomel Warrican (36), and Kemar Roach (25). This is just the second such instance in Test cricket where players batting at 9, 10, and 11 ended as the three top run scorers in the innings. The only previous instance came in the previous Test of the series in the visitor’s first innings when Warrican (31), Jayden Seales (22), and Motie (19) top scored in a total of 137. 38/7 The entry point of 38/7 from which Motie scored his maiden Test half-century – the joint second lowest for a #9 in an innings in Tests. The only No. 9 to score a fifty coming from a lower entry point was Charlie Absolom (52) for England against Australia in Melbourne in 1879 in what was just the third official Test match. Cyril Vincent (53) of South Africa also scored a fifty against England at the Old Wanderers in 1927 coming in at 38/7. 41.71% The percentage contribution by the tenth wicket stand of 68 between Motie and Warrican, the second highest for a tenth wicket partnership for West Indies, behind 50% by Roach and Miguel Cummins who added 50 runs coming in at 50/9 against India in North Sound in 2019. 35 runs aggregated by the top-eight for West Indies is their joint second-lowest aggregate in a Test innings. Kaveem Hodge aggregated 21 of those while the other seven cumulatively managed just 14 runs. The lowest such aggregate for them is 34 runs against England at Lord’s in 2000, followed by 35 against India in North Sound in 2019. 163 runs by West Indies in their first innings is the fourth lowest first innings total (first innings of the Test) where they bagged a first innings lead and the lowest such total in an away game. This is the first time since 1960 in Pakistan that a team bagged a first innings lead after getting bowled out for under 200.
