Women’s red-ball domestic cricket returns to India; BCCI announce resumption of Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy after five years
After a gap of five years, the Board of Control for Cricket in India have resumed the red-ball domestic tournament in women’s cricket. The Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy is all set to start on 28th March 2024. It was last held in 2018 and after a five-year gap, the tournament will mark its resumption.
Perhaps, the BCCI have planned to resume India’s red-ball domestic tournament in women’s cricket after the Indian team won their last two back-to-back Tests against England and Australia. Recently, many women’s cricketers have come forward to express their interest in playing more and more multi-day cricket.
Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy To Be Held In Maharashtra
Hence, the BCCI understands that there must be a pool of players in red-ball cricket in India cricket if the game witnesses a surge of red-ball matches in the future. Earlier, star opener, Smriti Mandhana also voiced her opinion in resuming the red-ball activities in the domestic circuit as this will allow the players to get used to playing the red-ball matches.
Earlier, the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy used to be a 2-day affair. However, the upcoming tournament will last three days, testing the players’ fitness levels.
Speaking of the venue, the tournament is set to be held in Pune, Maharashtra by the Maharashtra Cricket Association. East Zone will take on North East Zone, while West Zone will take on Central Zone in the Qualifiers.
The North Zone and South Zone, on the other hand, have already been qualified for the semi-finals. They will play against the winners of the qualifiers on the 3rd of April. Meanwhile, the final of the tournament is slated to be played from 9th April 2024.
Currently, Indian women’s cricket players are taking part in the Women’s Premier League along with some of the well-known overseas stars. Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals are sitting at the pole position after having won two matches out of three played so far.
RCB too have two wins in three games and finds themselves in second, followed by the likes of Mumbai Indians, UP Warriorz, and Gujarat Giants at the third, fourth, and final positions, respectively.
