Why is KKR vs RCB match known as El Primero?

Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders enjoy a storied rivalry in the Indian Premier League also now popularly known as El Primero. The two heavyweights have been involved in a lot of tussles over the years.

Their most documented antics on the field date back to 2013 when Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli had a verbal exchange with each other before Rajat Bhatia came to separate the two.

The two of India’s greatest cricketers continued to have a go at each other in the years to come. Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore have taken on each other on 32 occasions in the Indian Premier League.

Kolkata Knight Riders beat RCB 18 times, while RCB had the better of KKR 14 times in the cash-rich event. The two teams are currently locking horns with each other for the 33rd time in M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

It is worth mentioning that the first-ever match of the Indian Premier League also took place between these two sides and this is, in fact, the reason why the RCB vs KKR clash is called ‘El Primero’ of IPL.

History of El Primero

16-years ago, the Indian Premier League began with the big-ticket encounter between RCB and KKR. Brendon McCullum played an innings to remember as it set the tone of what became the biggest T20 league in the world.

The New Zealand opener played a sensational knock of 158 runs in the opening encounter and helped KKR register a comfortable 140-run victory. This was the first-ever clash of the tournament and hence the name emerged, ‘El Primero’, the first.

Last year, the two teams faced off each other twice and KKR won on both occasions. In the ongoing clash, RCB looks keen to take revenge as they managed to post a pretty good score in the first half of the innings while batting first.

Virat Kohli has scored his second half-century, currently unbeaten on 52 (38), while Glenn Maxwell (14 off 13) has spent enough time at the crease as well. At the time of writing, RCB has managed to score 109 runs for the loss of two wickets in 13 overs.
