Who is Naman Dhir, Mumbai Indians New Recruit

Mumbai Indians are known to hand debuts to young talents who have the spark & prowess to shine in the International arena. And the five-time IPL-winning team continued the trend by bringing in Naman Dhir in the lineup. Over the years, MI has played some most prolific T20 batters at No 3. From Suryakumar to Rohit Sharma to Cameron Green some big names batted at No 3 spot. And this time MI thought of giving this golden opportunity of batting at No. 3 to their recruit, Naman Dhir.

During MI’s fixture against GT, Naman Dhir walked to bat at No 3 when opener Ishan fell cheaply in the first over of the chase of 169 runs. Dhir was playing his sixth T20 fixture of his professional career & is yet to play any 50-over game in the domestic arena. However, it was his outstanding power-hitting & spark that helped him to grab a deal with Mumbai Indians.

At what price did MI buy the services of Naman Dhir?

Back in the IPL 2024 auction, Mumbai Indians bought the services of Naman Dhir for a whopping 20 lakhs, the 24-year-old young lad is a power-hitting batsman from Punjab. Recognized for his six-hitting capability,  his four T20 innings before this had earned him just 39 runs since his T20 debut a few months ago in November, with a high score of 17. In the Ranji Trophy, he has two centuries from 20 innings – both from last season – from 14 games for an average of 30.21.

However his gleaming performance in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 Cup – a state T20 league organised by the Punjab Cricket Association – in August last year that he made himself noticed with his hitting exploits. Playing for Punjab he smashed 466 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 192.56 while averaging 42.36. He scored two centuries along the way – 127 off 56 and 105 off 44 – including 30 sixes.

On Sunday Naman Dhir smashed three back-to-back fours against Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai and a six in the same over. Dhir lifted the first ball of the third over mid-off, the second over midwicket and the third (after a wide) for a one-bounce four to the square-leg boundary. Later smashing a dot ball, Dhir clobbered a half-volley over long-off for an 86-meter six. Omarzai, however, fought back on the last ball of the over by trapping Dhir lbw with the help of a review. However, Dhir played a fearless aggressive brand of cricket & ended his stint at 20 runs off 10 balls. But even after Dhir’s stellar innings Mi failed to cross the bridge & fell short of the target by six runs.

Though MI failed to win the match Naman Dhir’s stellar innings was a major positive for Mumbai Indians.
