Australian cricketer, Charles Bannerman has the record of hitting the first-ever Test century in Cricket. In the very first Test match ever played in Cricket between England and Australia in 1877 at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia opener Charles Bannerman played a sensational knock of 165 runs, including 18 fours before walking off the field and retiring hurt.

Despite wickets falling at short intervals on the other hand, Bannerman kept taking on English bowlers and took Australia to a respectable first-inning score of 245 runs.

In reply, England were bundled out for just 196 runs on the board. Australia in their second innings, could only manage to score 104 but bowled exceedingly well to pick all 10 wickets of the England team in the fourth innings for just 108 runs, thus winning the game by 45 runs. Australia won both the Test of the two-match series and claimed the series 2-0.

Interestingly, Charles Bannerman only played three Test matches for Australia before becoming an umpire. Charles Bannerman also holds the record for facing the first-ever delivery in cricket and also scoring the first-ever run by a batsman.

In 3 Test matches, he managed to score 239 runs in his career and an average of 59.8, including one century.

Unfortunately, his cricket career made an early exit due to illness and, later took on coaching and umpiring roles at different points in his life. Charles Bannerman died at the age of 79 in 1930.
