Trent Boult fiery spell guided BlackCaps to 5 wicket win
Coming to the fixture, it was the Black Caps star-studded pace attack that set the tone of victory for the Kiwis. They managed to scalp early wickets & restrict Sri Lanka from posting a huge total on board. Before the conclusion of the powerplay, the Lankans were down by five wickets after posting a total of 74 runs on board. Boult set the tone for Black Caps by conceding just one single run in the first over. He got valuable support from Tim Southee who made the most of the available chance & made most of it by dismissing Nissankla for just 2(28)
Boult imposed his dominance in the fixture right in the fourth over by removing Mendis for 6(7). In the same over he dismissed Samarawickrama (1) who went down while attempting to play a stroke shot & found an edge that carried straight to Daryl Mitchell at the wide slip. Though Perera was successful in registering his fifty, Boult continued to scalp wickets with Charith Asalanka (8) becoming his latest victim. He failed to maintain the momentum & got trapped in front of wickets. Ferguson rubbed salt on Lanka’s wounds by dismissing Perera who was looking to end the powerplay on a high note. Perera tried to clear the boundary but launched the ball high in the air which ended up in Santner’s hands at covers.
Wickets continued to fall one after the other as the middle order batters failed to stitch a rewarding stand & bring Lankans back into the game Maheesh Theekshana & Dilshan combined together to put a 43-run stand for the final wicket & take Sri Lanka’s score to 171. However, Sri Lanka failed to get going in front of the Black Caps fierce pace attack & succumbed to a humiliating 5 wickets defeat.
