England’s star pacer, Tom Curran who is representing Sydney Sixers in the ongoing BBL 13 has received a four-match ban for level 3 offence as per Cricket Australia’s Code of Conduct. Curran was found guilty of intimidating an Umpire & thus was awarded a four-match ban. Sixers have indicated that they will vigorously appeal the sanction & will oppose it.
The incident happened during Sixers’ previous fixture against Hobart Hurricanes in Launceston on December 11. According to Cricket Australia, Curran was trying to complete a practice run-up on the pitch during the teams’ pre-match drills. The fourth umpire then came & stopped Curran from getting on the pitch which resulted in an altercation between the umpire & Curran.
The CA statement mentioned that the umpire positioned himself beside the stumps, preventing Curran from approaching the pitch. The umpire signaled to Curran to step away. In the video footage, Curran is seen gesturing for the umpire to move. Later, Curran attempted a practice run-up, charging directly at the umpire in the bowling crease. The umpire, in response, moved to his right to avert any potential collision.
