T20 World Cup: England likely to add spinner Tom Hartley

The England Cricket Team is contemplating adding Tom Hartely to the T20 World Cup squad keeping in mind the spin-friendly pitches in West Indies. The upcoming T20 World Cup is all set to begin on the 1st of June in the USA and the West Indies.

England has a prominent spinner in Adil Rashid, who is their go-to bowler in such conditions. However, with stadiums like Antigua, St Lucia, and Barbados favoring spinners, historically, England might add more spinners to their squad.

Earlier, Rehan Ahmed was in contention to make it into the squad. He has good numbers in whatever T20I matches he has played for the Three Lions. Ahmed has 9 wickets to his name in seven matches at an average of 25.33.

Hartley yet to make T20I debut for England

On the other hand, Tom Hartley is yet to make his T20I debut for England. He holds an experience of playing 82 T20 matches, picking 68 wickets at an average of 26.47. England are inclined more toward picking Hartley in the squad as he offers variety to the spin attack.

He provides a left-arm spin option and can hit some big blows while batting down the order. He showed his mettle with the bat in the recent five-match series against India. It will be interesting to see if England would take the risk of playing him directly in the T20 World Cup without having any T20 international experience under his belt.

There is also a possibility that England might opt for three spinners in the squad as well. England’s all-rounder, Moeen Ali also provides a spin option as well, and considering that, they could add two spinners in the squad if not two. Moeen Ali’s terrific record in the shortest format would restrict England to adding three spinners to the squad.

In 82 T20Is, he has managed to claim 45 wickets at 8.33. The third one, though, could travel with the squad as a net bowler.
