Mitchell Starc Finds His Stride as KKR Maintain Perfect Start in IPL 2024

The hefty price tag of ₹24.75 crore (approx. US$2.98 million) seemed a burden for Mitchell Starc in his first two outings for the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024. He went wicketless and conceded over 100 runs in eight overs combined.

However, Wednesday’s match in Visakhapatnam was a different story. Aided by a mammoth 272-run score from the KKR batsmen, Starc, one of the premier fast bowlers of the modern era, finally found his rhythm. He struck twice in quick succession, dismissing Mitchell Marsh and David Warner in his second and third overs respectively.

“In T20 cricket, we all need a bit of luck,” Starc admitted after the match. “A dropped catch or an edge going your way can make a big difference. You have to move on quickly because the games come thick and fast.”

While Starc acknowledged a challenging start, he emphasized the importance of team wins: “We’re three from three, and tonight we were good with both bat and ball. Personal stuff aside, the team’s start has been fantastic.”

Indeed, the bigger picture for KKR is their perfect record. Almost every player has contributed significantly, propelling them to the top of the table after all teams have played at least three games.

Starc Impressed with KKR Bowlers

Turning to the specifics of the match, Starc was particularly impressed by young pacer Vaibhav Arora, who rattled the Delhi Capitals’ top order with his swing bowling and picked up three wickets for just 27 runs.

“He was fantastic tonight,” Starc said of Arora. “He used the short ball really well. For me, it’s about sharing knowledge during training and bowling meetings. We have some youngsters who haven’t faced experienced batsmen like David Warner before. It’s about discussing strategies and watching them bowl in the nets.”

The bowling attack’s success was built on the foundation laid by a blazing batting display. Sunil Narine’s explosive 85 off 29 balls set the tone, followed by valuable contributions from Angkrish Raghuvanshi (54 off 27), Andre Russell (41 off 19), and Rinku Singh (26 off 8). Their combined efforts propelled KKR to a score of 272 for 7, just five runs shy of the highest IPL total ever.

KKR captain Shreyas Iyer highlighted the team’s aggressive batting approach: “We started aiming for 210-220, but 272 was the icing on the cake. Sunny’s role is to go out there and attack from the start. We have other batters who can take on the bowlers and ensure a strong total.”

With a potent batting lineup and a bowling attack that’s starting to click, KKR look like a strong contender in the race for the IPL 2024 title.
