India’s Asia Cup 2023 Squad was announced on Monday, 21st August 2023 & the announcement came with surprises & shocking exclusions. There were speculations about having an extra spinner in the Asia Cup Squad with World Cup 2023 in the picture. But the team management & selection committee made some shocking decisions by going with just one wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav & two all-rounder spin options in the face of Axar Patel & R Jadeja. This resulted in the exclusion of R Ashwin, & Yuzvendra Chahal who were the top contenders for a spot in India’s Asia Cup 2023 Squad.
Despite an average run in ODIs, Suryakumar Yadav has been chosen in place of Sanju Samson in the main squad. While veteran players KL Rahul & Shreyas Iyer will make a comeback from injuries, team management handed a surprise maiden call-up to Tilak Verma who is yet to make his ODI debut. It’s understood that Tilak made a wild card entry based on his good run in the recently concluded T20I series against West Indies. However, his counterpart Jaiswal who too made his presence felt by scoring a century on his Test debut has been ignored in Asia Cup 2023 squad. There are many shocking exclusions in India’s Asia Cup 2023 squad that have left fans fuming with anger.
Top 5 shocking exclusions from India’s Asia Cup 2023 Squad:
5) Yashasvi Jaiswal
The talented youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal makes a cut to our list of shocking exclusions from India’s Asia Cup 2023 Squad. The young lad has made his presence felt first by displaying a thunderous performance in IPL 2023. And later proving his prowess in Test format by scoring his maiden Test century right on his debut fixture was left out of the Asia Cup 2023 squad. This is because his counterpart Tilak Verma has been chosen over him. The reason behind leaving Jaiswal is that his performance in the recently concluded t20I series against Ireland & West Indies was not satisfactory.
On the other hand, Tilak played well in the IND vs WI T20I series & returned with consistent scores. Also overlooking Jaiswal is that he is considered as a promising opening option in the indian team while Tilak is known for his middle-order heroics. Considering these factors Tilak was given priority over Jaiswal. However, many Cricket pundits viewed that Jaiswal should be the choice over Suryakumar who couldn’t make a mark despite playing 20 ODIs. However, Jaiswal’s inclusion in the future ODI series couldn’t be ruled out looking at his outstanding form in Test format.
