Sharfuddoula Joins ICC Elite Panel of Umpires

The ICC has appointed Sharfuddoula to the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires making him the first Bangladeshi to be included in the elite panel. However, the new panel of match referees hasn’t included veteran player Chris Broad who has officiated in almost the third-most number of International matches. Broad has been in the elite panel since 2003 and has officiated in 123 Tests, 361 ODIs, and 135 T20Is. He was the match referee in the final of the 2009 T20 World Cup and the 2021 World Test Championship.

In an official statement released by the ICC, Geoff Allardice, the ICC CEO, expressed gratitude towards Chris Broad for his significant contributions as a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Allardice acknowledged Broad’s exemplary service over the years, highlighting his commitment to making tough decisions for the betterment of the game. Broad’s professionalism and integrity earned him respect from players and officials worldwide. On behalf of the ICC, Allardice extended heartfelt appreciation to Broad for his long-standing and distinguished service to cricket.

It’s worth mentioning the remarkable achievement of Sharfuddoula in joining the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires. Being the first umpire from Bangladesh to earn this distinction is truly commendable. This recognition is a testament to Sharfuddoula’s dedication and consistent performances in international matches and ICC tournaments over the years. It’s a well-deserved accolade that highlights his professionalism and expertise in umpiring.

Sharfuddoula was delighted with his appointment at the highest level, a feat he has been waiting to achieve for a long time. Sharfuddoula was a former left-arm spinner who played for Bangladesh in the 1994 ICC Trophy. He took to umpiring in 2007 & made his ODI debut in 2010.

Sharfuddoula expressed his immense pride in being selected for the ICC Elite Panel. Being the inaugural representative from his nation adds an extra layer of significance to this achievement. He eagerly anticipates demonstrating his capabilities and living up to the trust placed in him.

With ample experience under his belt, Sharfuddoula feels prepared for the more demanding tasks that lie ahead. He extends his gratitude to both the ICC and the BCB for their unwavering support and his colleagues for their assistance and guidance. Additionally, Sharfuddoula acknowledges the unwavering support of his family and friends throughout his journey.

A Glimpse of Sharfuddoula’s Achievements

Sharfuddoula has been officiated in ten Tests, 63 ODis & 44 T20Is in Men’s cricket. He has also featured in 41 women’s international matches. In 2023, Sharfuddoula stood as an umpire in the ODI World Cup 2023 becoming the first Bangladeshi to do so. He has also stood in the Brisbane Test between Australia and West Indies earlier this year.
