Former Indian cricketer and commentator, Deep Dasgupta has made a big statement regarding Rishabh Pant’s future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The revered commentator feels that CSK could rope in Rishabh Pant by the 2025 edition of the IPL and could well become MS Dhoni’s successor after his retirement.
Deep Dasgupta drew similarities between MS Dhoni and Rishabh Pant and also talked about the special bond the duo shares with each other.
In a video posted on ‘X’, he said:
“Don’t be surprised if they get Rishabh Pant by IPL 2025. MS Dhoni and Rishabh Pant are very close. Obviously, Rishabh adores MS, and MS also likes him very much. They spend a lot of time together. Their connection and Rishabh’s thinking are very similar, considering he is very attacking and positive. He’s always talking about winning and whatnot,”
Dasgupta said during a recent interview.
Pant has been an integral part of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League for many years now. He was roped into the set-up in the 2016 edition and has been a permanent member since.
Pant was given the task of leading the Delhi franchise in the 2021 edition after Shreyas Iyer got ruled out due to injury. Despite him making his comeback in the second half of the tournament, Pant persisted as captain.
Pant captained the team in the 2022 season as well, however, the team didn’t have a great season. They finished in the fifth spot, winning only 7 games out of 14.
Rishabh Pant’s Participation in IPL 2024 Unclear
Unfortunately, the Indian wicket-keeper batter met with a tragic accident in December 2022. Pant was going back home from Delhi to Roorkee in his car and at around 5:30 am, he fell asleep and his car hit the divider on the Delhi-Dehradun highway.
He was brought to a hospital in Roorkee but was, later, transferred to Max Hospital in Dehradun for further treatment. Severe injuries on his fractured wrist, toe, back, and head meant Pant missed major tournaments in 2023, which included the IPL edition as well.
David Warner replaced him as captain in the 2023 edition but if reports are to be believed, Rishabh Pant is set to come back and lead the team in the upcoming 2024 IPL edition.
Keeping in mind the severity of the injuries, currently, it looks highly unlikely for Pant to make a comeback. Although, he is working hard on his fitness to get back onto the field.
