India’s Missed Opportunities Lead to Opening Test Defeat Against England, Says ICT Coach Rahul Dravid
India’s head coach Rahul Dravid expressed disappointment over India’s missed opportunities in their opening test against England, attributing their loss to a failure to capitalize on favorable batting conditions.
India’s first innings performance at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium seemed promising as they posted a commanding total of 436 in response to England’s 246. However, Dravid believes they fell short of maximizing their advantage, leaving crucial runs on the table.
“Conditions were pretty good to bat in on day two, and I thought we probably had 70 runs less on the board in the first innings,” Dravid remarked after the match.
Talking about fourth day chase, Dravid said, “It was always going to be challenging to chase 230 on a fourth-day wicket which was turning.”
Despite commendable performances from Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja, who all made significant contributions with the bat, Rahul Dravid noted that the team failed to convert promising starts into substantial scores. Both Axar Patel and Srikar Bharat fell short of fifties, adding to the missed opportunities.
A number of Indian batters got the start but unfortunately none of them could convert their starts into big innings. “I thought in those kinds of situations we got ourselves into some good starts but we did not truly capitalise,” Dravid said.
“So in some ways, we left those 70-80 runs back in the first innings… I’m a little bit more disappointed with our first innings.”
England’s resurgence, led by Ollie Pope’s remarkable innings of 196, turned the tide in their favor. Pope’s adeptness in playing spin, highlighted by his footwork and innovative shots, posed a challenge for the Indian bowlers and set the stage for England’s comeback.

Debutant spinner Tom Hartley’s exceptional bowling performance further compounded India’s woes, as he claimed 7-62 to dismantle India’s batting lineup in the second innings, restricting them to a mere 202 runs.
Reflecting on the team’s struggles against spin, Rahul Dravid pointed out the lack of exposure to first-class cricket among several Indian players, who predominantly feature in white-ball formats. He emphasized the learning curve for the team in adapting to the challenges posed by Test cricket.
Despite the defeat, Dravid acknowledged Pope’s stellar innings, attributing England’s victory to his exceptional performance. “It’s one of those games where you… come out and give your best and if somebody does something exceptional, you shake his hand and congratulate him,” Rahul Dravid stated.
As India regroups ahead of the second test, Dravid remains optimistic about the team’s growth and learning from their mistakes. With lessons learned from the opening encounter, India aims to bounce back stronger in the remaining matches of the series.
